Has anybody modified a frunk to use plain old gas springs? Are there ForScan codes for only using the frunk latch, not the linear actuators and the @&$* beeper?

The trunk on our Mach-E Select uses plain gas springs, and it has been just fine... In contrast, I've had the Famous Frunk Malfunction (requiring manual closing a couple of times to fix) after only having opened the frunk a couple dozen times since buying the truck.

I know most people wouldn't tolerate a manual frunk, but for some of us it might be preferred.
I would personally rather have a manual frunk.

It's slow because of lawyers. It needs time to beep. I hate the nanny features on this truck, much prefer the wild west in the Tesla world where frunks sever limbs and summon runs over small children.

You can unplug the speaker and then use forscan to disable the alert that its absense normally generates. Doesn't help with reliability but it stops the annoying sound.

About time to do some hacking...or maybe just put some sound absorbent glop on the beeper. (Replace it with an appropriately specified resistor?) Will consider going manual in the future, though, as I found that when the frunk malfunctioned, it wasn't so bad operating it by hand anyway! It wasn't raining, though.

Does everyone else's frunk and bed door almost always require two button presses? I walk up, press the bed door button, it makes beeps and I hear stuff actuating, nothing happens, press it again, it opens.

I assume it is attempting to close on the first press but I don't know why it is always doing this when bed door is up on the frunk is closed.

Minor gripe, but this is one of my pet peeves with this truck! It takes 3 full seconds from the moment the button is pressed until the moment the frunk begins to open. Then another 2-3 seconds to actually open. The actuator speed being slow is understandable given the size and weight of the frunk.
Is the initial 3 second delay in place just so that it can do the beeping? I've disconnected the beeping speaker so now it's just 3 seconds of nothingness.
Wondering if any of these (initial delay or actuator speed) can be altered in software.
Drives me insane as well. At least you took the time to disconnect that speaker.

I only use PAAK so it's also a time sink / doesnt make sense to open the app once in bluetooth range and 'pre-open' it.

My favorite is when someone is helping me bring things to the frunk. We walk up, I push the button, then we stare at eachother.
