I placed an order for a base XLT a few days ago and have some anxiety over the price (in my case a $65k MSRP deal) and the thought the truck might not be eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit. If it turns out I'm only eligible for $3,750 I might decide it's simply too expensive and decide not to go through with the purchase.

When I placed the order online the final step was authorizing a $1,000 charge against my credit card as a deposit. Am I right in thinking that is my maximum liability? I have not signed a written purchase agreement at this point. I'm assuming that if I don't go through with the deal I would lose the $1,000 plus the $100 reservation fee but otherwise the only downside would be a little bad blood with the dealer.

I guess we won't know the answer to the tax credit question for several months.

Unless your dealer is doing something abnormal, both the initial $100 and the $1000 deposit should be fully refundable. It should cost you nothing to walk away.

Any decent dealer should let you walk and refund your deposits. If the lots were full of them that might be a different story.

I seem to recall the when you place your order you get a warning to check with the dealership if the $100 and second deposit to the dealer are refundable.

And with things the way they are I bet a any dealer would be super happy to refund your deposits lol. SO they can tack on there ADM
