Lightning in New NHTSA Full-Overlap Frontal Crash Test Video

Not sure if this is old news, but I thought it was an interesting video. Everything seemed to hold up, but I was surprised by the shattering of the rear window and all the glass flying forward.

So, even the crash testers couldn't find anything but Lariats on the lot. ROFL.

Shame they pull the battery, that mass is absolutely going to change the physics of a wreck. I get the safety factor, but you would think they could install an equivalent hunk of lead or something.

The way the mirrors flex, and the way the front windows pop up out of the doors (they were rolled down) looked crazy to me. Overall, looked decently safe other than the amount of rear glass that's going to rain down on my kids in the back seat, but maybe that was partially due to the equipment they were running through the rear window.

FWIW the rear glass is tempered. I was rear ended in a crossover SUV and had the same sort of rear glass raining all the way to the front of the vehicle. I got out of the car with a bunch of glass bits on my lap and noticed some made it to the dashboard. Didn’t get cut at all, they were little smooth bits of glass.

I’d guess part of the test is to see if the battery is damaged to the extent it becomes dangerous.

Maybe the test it independently, but they just pulled the battery off. There was no battery in the shot looking underneath the truck.

I presumed the battery was in there and they just took off the protective shrouding. Otherwise your right, the lack of weight would change the end result.

Was thinking the same thing about my kids in the back. Luckily they’re still in harness style car seats that come up above their heads so it should deflect most of it.

Good to know, hopefully we all never have to find out just how smooth those pieces are in the ford…

But overall, I'm glad to see the truck is pretty safe! I'm interested to see how it does on a roof strength test and a rollover test, like the moose test, I'd imagine the center of gravity being so much lower, means it'll be much more stable.

I got in a head on (more on drivers side) collision in 2018 in a Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, and the back glass shattered too. My infant was rear facing, but thankfully it didn't cut him or my four year old who was forward facing. Truck kept us safe. As safe as Tesla's are, I feel the Lightning will keep us safe as well with the battery weight.

The battery was in there. Everything was sprayed white but yes, it's there. It was an SR, they had it charged to 100% showing 230 miles of range.
