Is there a truck culture gap for the Lightning vs the ICE F-150s?

They’ll get here when they get here, just like when they started taking V8’s away for Turbo V6’s, eventually everyone accepted and transitioned.
They were “mad” then too.

We need to stop with the Us vs Them narrative. EV people get angry at ICE owners just because they won’t consider an EV so it isn’t only ICE owners who get angry.

4 banger vs V6

Import vs Domestic

No replacement for displacement

We’ve all heard this before and eventually everyone accepted
Oh but us Vs. them usually gets 'clicks', longer website loiter times and all the metrics that forums use to sell Ad Space.

Good for you ROD for speaking up. The exploitation and virtual fueling of friction between parties is disappointing but huge shout out to those who don't take the bait. ICE, BEV, Hydrogen, and all the others are welcome and there's room for all!

"but the grid can't handle EV's!".

the same person would never worry about houses with one of the following: an electric range, AC, Heat pump, finished basement suite with second range and clothes dryer, the buildout of new neighbourhoods in general or higher density rezoning of existing neighbourhoods. the grid just can't handle EV's...

Until BEV technology improves to actually take over ICE vehicles, there will always be a need for ICE.

Currently, I believe it's at infancy.

Once we get to the point of having much faster recharge times, stable & energy denser battery cells, and ICE like behavior (towing, hauling, range, etc) is when we will start to switch over.

Until then, my dad's diesel truck will still reign supreme for towing, hauling and heavy duty farm work.....

The fact that EVs are political is IMO - dumb. They. Are. Just. Cars.
Erratic politicians (both sides) are charging up ;) the vitriol, we rational individuals need to make decisions for ourselves, I have plenty of contacts who are negatively swayed, don't understand or unwilling to understand the benefits of investing in the growth of EV technology/vehicles. There are plenty of use cases where the current state would not meet their requirements, to them we agree now is not the time for them to take a leap.

Years ago when Tesla Model S first came out, (what 2012?).. I loved the idea but convinced myself that the range would not work for us and that setting up home charging was just too expensive..........Man, was I misinformed.

I had no concept of charging every night. No idea how much cheaper it would have been for us since we lived pretty far from work, 40miles each way. Just 1 EV in addition to our other car would have saved us a small fortune.

There could be a gap in culture, but there is also no EV that can work hard all day, nope, not even the Lightning.

My use case will be a commuter/daily driver that other than 3 or 4 times a year never goes more than 40 to 60 miles in a day. Those other 3 to 4 times a year is usually about 200 miles to where most of my family lives. An EV likely is the perfect thing.

On the other hand speaking of family, my brother builds houses and ranches. Over 100 head of momma cows. There are days he may drive to a house site and then come home and haul two loads of cows to the stock yards. That would be about 250 miles of hard pulling with a 1 ton truck. ICE will not ever go away until that can be handled easily. Plus keep in mind the cost of what it would cost today to build that kind of truck. The person that needs to buy and use that truck would never be able to afford it if it could be built today.

So like any major product shift, it will take time, but it may be 20 to 30 years to get there. Also while many want to think the EV will make the oil industry go away to save the environment, it is not that straight forward yet either. There are definitely environmental costs, just different kinds to building and powering that battery. I bought a Tesla for the technology and driving characteristics. I'm buying the Lightning because I want to drive a truck again and now can do so with some very good driving characteristics, it has nothing to do with the environment.

Yeah, we bought our first EV because my commute was 3 miles one way at the time. Even when I changed jobs, and the commute became 30 miles one way it was fine for a car with only 90 miles of range. The savings in fuel costs has been crazy. It costs about $2.50 to "fill". For city driving it is amazing with the instant torque. We got it to save money - and it has. The fact that it is better for the environment is just a nice side effect, not the prime motivator.

As someone who works in the power industry (although not in generation or transmission) this one just makes me shake my head. Trust me the utilities know how to plan for additional loads and the grid will be just fine as EVs are gradually adopted.

Remember all the concern that the grid couldn’t handle homes with central air conditioning? Neither do I.

Yes!

I remember, yes I am that old!

Thanks for that reminder - our EVs will be fine with such limited amount of energy compared to a house with combined draw for: A/C, heat pumps, ranges, stoves, dishwashers, dryers, and washing machines...

I think the culture differences we'll see are the same ones that existed when the Model S first came out. Then, it was "EV people" vs. "Luxury German Import people." Granted, I don't think the latter group was ever as fervent as truck people are, but the themes I see are the same:

"It can't beat the performance"

"It can't beat the range"

"Tesla's not even a real car company (still!)"

"But mah engun noise!!!"

One by one, most of those talking points faded away. Now all the guys who used to fancy themselves Import Snobs are sipping their Starbucks while their car is on Autopilot. I think the same thing will happen with the F-150 Lightning. At first, the range/towing/sound arguments will be made - and in some cases will even be valid. However, over time and iterations, those voices will gradually get quieter (just like their F-150s).

EVs are kind of like the borg. At first there's a valiant resistance, but you let someone drive it once and they're assimilated into the collective.

Well said!
I am one of the German import people since 2001.

First time I am switching over to EV without getting an Audi eTron or iX BMW EV.

I also believe there are people that see EVs as nothing more than golf carts. Also are a scam, and I'm sure there are other things.

I am one of the 50+ people that are on the list, hoping to be able to order this summer/fall as well. My current commute is 20 miles each way to work, soon to be cut in half with new position coming up and going to different building. The only thing I am worried about (and hopefully will not be the case) is traveling to out of state softball tournaments and the hotel having spots to charge, that is what I have been watching for. One thing that would be a nice to see is a Plug in Hybrid F150, but probably will not see that at all
