Are we gonna see more of "it's just too big" from folks looking for electric but have little or no experience with a truck?

Not ragging on the OP, just thinking out loud.

I see lots of folks with reservations for a Lightning and no experience with a full sized truck. It can be a bit intimidating for some folks, I would imagine.

I've owned a 1 ton dually before and had no trouble getting through drive throughs etc....but had many folks comment on how big it was
meh, iā€™ve owned multiple full sized trucks and i still think they are pointlessly large. Rivian did the right thing by picking a size between a Ranger and F-150, that size truck is sorely missing from the market. i just wish it was more of a utility truck than a ā€œlifestyleā€ truck. Oh, and that they werenā€™t a brand new company.

I suspect what a lot of people are reacting to is a sense that a reservation/order was occupied by someone who didn't know what they were getting into. I'm sure there's actually quite a few of those across the 200k, but I can understand the frustration by some who worked really hard to get a reservation and/or order, or who haven't been able to do even that yet, who have a much better idea about what to expect.

This may be a ā€œtrollā€ pedaling this scenario --- who didnā€™t really have a delivered Lariat that he rejected purchasing.

He definitely is not providing any info to confirm it.

Definitely not. He has a point that he is expecting better materials and quality for $80k price tag.

But you cannot buy a Corolla and complain it is not roomy as an Impala right?

I respect the OPā€™s honest opinion and made the same decision with respect to value proposition on order day. Fortunately I was first wave and was able to order a Pro which I think is a good value proposition. Hopefully I like it after purchase, if not it will get sold and Iā€™ll move on to something else.

I drive a crew cab 1500 truck daily for work (construction), if I didnā€™t need one I would drive something smaller like my 2 door Bronco or my wifeā€™s Tacoma. I think many people in urban areas coming from small cars will have an issue with the size, but many who are emotionally invested will nut up and deal with it. My 1500 work truck can be challenging in metro Boston, but anywhere outside of the city or on Cape Cod isnā€™t generally is issue.

Not sure what you mean by "definitely not"- as in that's not what most people are reacting to? Just trying to clarify. And agreed expectations are relative.

Re: the price relative to the materials, a similarly equipped 2022 ICE F150 Lariat is in the same ballpark, at around $75k. Would have been pretty easy to do a little bit of investigation/research about what you get from Ford for that cost, before making a reservation/placing an order.

I donā€™t understand why folks think that a test drive of an ICE F150 is relevant to a Lightning. While the cabs are similar, the power trains and chassis are different animals.

I agree with OP that the workmanship of the F150, while very nice, will not be upto the Volvo SPA platform level. I know, because I have two.

Itā€˜s about what you like, expectations and comfort spending $80K. But fir the crazy used car market when I sold my Suburban in January, it would be a much more difficult decision for me from a value perspective. While I do not expect the F150 to be at the level of my Volvo wagon, I do expect it to provide me the value and comfort that I would expect firm an $80K truck. And to put that dollar figure into perspective, the cost of my brand new townhouse in the DC area in 1986 (in a good suburban neighborhood) was $86K. That dichotomy is still something I have a hard time wrapping my head around, especially since I would have only paid off the 30 year mortgage 5 years ago and our financing for cars is 5 to 6 years.

Bottom line is that we have to make sure that all the boxes can be checked and that we are getting a good value for the dollar. Seems to me that OP has made a good analysis based upon his needs. And, this is something that I have to do when spending public monies - making sure that each expenditure provides the best value fir the taxpayer possible.

For one it would have gave him a taste of what it was driving a full size truck even for a short time. Two, he could have seen the quality of the materials. Three, the cabin comfort and noise.

He had no gripes about the power train or suspension other than regen.

I expect more from Tesla on a $50k car compared to other $50k Cars but it is what it is. Lastly, I think we are being trolledā€¦..

Thanks for your honest opinion, and I am sorry it didn't float your boat. I suspect I may feel the same way when it comes time to put my John Hancock next to an 81k asking price. That said, I just can't fathom why you let the dealer have that 40k. Why on EARTH didn't you buy it and pocket that 40k yourself? I bet you could have driven it for 2k miles 'trying to like it' and still flipped it for that if you still didn't like it.

They capped the reservations at 250k. There are more reservations than projected production in the first 3 Model Years of the lightning. I wish I had had the forethought to make 10 reservations. Best ROI in the world on a $100 fully refundable deposit.

To really put that dollar into perspective, $86k in 1986 translates to $227k today, and I'd wager you could sell it for at least twice that if not more today.

C'mon man, filled out a form, plopped $100 down, then placed an order a few months later. I get the emotional investment, but placing an order requires almost no work so I don't understand this framing.

I wish there had been a demo or mannequin to drive, or a demo day like they had with the Bronco. There was one event 3 hours away from me and I wasn't able to attend. Otherwise, this would have been clarified sooner.

I don't see the ICE and Lightning being an apt comparision for driving any more than a Ranger for the Bronco, the Mustang ICE for the Mach or many other comparisions.

It might piss some people off, which is not my intent, but I don't feel the least but guilty about it. IF I am going to spend $80 k on a vehicle, it IS going to check off all the boxes, not just a few of the boxes. YMMV.
