Truck disabled by some sort of electronic or software issue

Since last Wednesday the 8th, my truck has had a strange issue that the dealer has been unable to fix. So far, the problem seems to be triggered by preconditioning the cabin through the Fordpass app. Basically, the truck is completely immobilized. Accessories will come on, but the truck cannot be shifted out of park. In order to get the truck into neutral, for towing purposes, you cannot use the instructions in the manual, but rather you have to press in both the brake and the accelerator with the accessories on and then pull it into neutral and press the temporary neutral button.

The first time it happened was after a day of driving, and the 12v battery simultaneously failed. We are not sure if these are related or coincidental. There was a stop vehicle immediately alert and a PWS alert. The Start button will not go solid when pressed, it will only flash.

Each time it was “fixed”, three times now, the technician was able to drive the truck and everything seemed fine. The common event before each occurrence, was preconditioning the cabin, which failed, according to the app.

Fixes so far include: replacement of 12v battery, which was done next day, and major software update of all systems which took 2 full days.

Did they use a high capacity 12v power supply when loading all the updates, they might have stressed the replacement 12v battery as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The exterior power supply is important from other histories
Interesting, do you by any chance have a few more details that I can pass along? It’s hard to convince the service guys that some other guys on a forum said “such and such” is the problem.

That is very interesting I had something kind of like that. This may not be related, but I will tell my story.

I went out to my truck to get the actual mileage for my charge log I keep. Because after the karaoke update the Ford Pass app was not keeping up with the mileage anymore. The truck is in my garage so it is never locked. I went without my phone or a key not thinking and I opened the door thinking it would just light up like it had in the past, but it did not the dash screen was blank so I hit the button and the dash and big screen flashed then went out with a message to enter backup code because no key was detected. Unfortunately I do not remember what that code is I have it in my phone. I got my key and phone but now the dash still blank, but the big screen came on, but the shifter was locked. I tried everything shut it off waited and tried again. It finally let me put it in gear, but dash still blank. I had an errand to run and figured I could still use it without the dash, but I needed to get my wallet so shut it off got my wallet back it the truck and dash still blank now big screen is also blank and I cannot even turn it on or put it in gear. I am totally locked out of driving it. I had to take my ICE vehicle. When I got back about 45min later I tried again and everything was back to normal. I can only guess that I triggered some kind of theft prevention that locked me out for a while, but it sure scared me thinking this truck essentially left me stranded even though I had a key plus phone as a key.

Well, so far, according to the service department, they have had two calls into Ford Engineering to resolve the issue.

In Canada, I think you might need to use a power supply that is 1.4 times stronger due to the conversion.

Joking aside, the cold will also impact that battery performance. So they'd be wise to go beyond the minimum spec's being discussed. You essentially have to run the whole trucks systems via off-board power.
