When I arrived home last night the display behind wheel displayed a reminder to plug in car to keep it ready for the cold. Went down to 18F in NY. The car didn’t need a charge as it was at my 90% limit. I plugged in overnight to 120v Ford charger. This morning it had a new message on Ford pass that it was preparing to drive. I have no departures set.

I assume due to the low temperature it is heating the ER HV batteries. Didn’t realize this worked with 120v charger. Also see 1/3 battery range loss in very cold weather according to estimate. I think it goes up after driving a while.

is there any documentation on this feature? Has anyone measured the kw-hr used in cold weather?

Depending upon cost the garage maybe a top priority on colder days!

I've had my Pro for 3 days so I'm hardly an expert but I do pay attention to the guess-o-meter vs SOC. The estimated range does go back up after driving a little bit (basically equivalent to what it said the night before minus the amount I drove for the days I have had it). I dont know of any documentation on the self heating but I do know it will use the HV battery or the wall to keep the HV battery temperature above some critical temp. I hit 24 as an overnight low last night so I think we're both going to find what that magic number is sooner or later!

Just parked for the night, after a day of short trips, she is charging now.

I will monitor the overnight and Sunday log from my Emporia energy monitor, no plans to drive the Lightning on Sunday.

One thing for sure, the battery heater uses a lot more power than the 120V cord can supply.
Yup, 5.509+kWh in a 46 minute period of time, that converts to 7.186kWh, 6 times what a mobile charger can output.

Wow, that is substantial usage to warm the battery. Guess one needs to include that in the effective mileage in cold weather in terms of cost. Hope to get our lightning in the garage this weekend before the Siberia cold front comes in next week. Lots of rearranging my shop to handle the length of the vehicle ;). Thank you for the measurement. Was that a "preparing to drive" step the Lightning did on its own to keep the car ready to go or do you have a schedule set to take off in morning?

I had a departure time of 0815, that included warming the truck, the truck decided when to kick off the preparation on its own, it did not send any special notification about it the night before.

When we have a deep freeze, I am going to repeat this test and see how much juice is used.
