Why would regenerative braking wear the tires any more noticeably than just having gobs of torque available. Who brakes lighter than regen?

I think we are all about to witness and experience a big evolution in tires. The demands of EVs are one thing. But the new science (and litigation) linking tire chemicals to mass die-offs of coho salmon in Puget Sound is likely more consequential in terms of local environmental impacts. If current tire chemistry is a nearly guaranteed death sentence for salmon, it probably isn’t good for other living things in all sorts of places far from salmon streams outside Tacoma. I’ll wager that 5 years from now we will be dealing with a very different — and better — product.

...I went with the Cooper Discover Road and Trial AT. Nice tire, looks great on the truck, minimal road noise BUT major loss in efficiency. Plus add the cold weather now and uuugh!...

What's the mi/kwh you're getting with with the Coopers and cold weather? Road and Trail AT are one the choices I consider as my next set.

I'm actually on the first road trip (235 miles) since getting them. Temperature during the drive was approximately 45 degrees, I averaged 70 mph, not a whole lot of wind, and got 1.7 - 1.8 mi/kwh.

I started the trip fully charged the GOM, showed 320 miles of range @ 100 %. When I arrived, I was down to 9% and 20 miles of range remaining. I stopped and charged at a Tesla supercharger to about 75%, expecting temps to dip below 20 degrees later today.

All things being equal, I’d guess I’ll get closer to 50-60k out of these. I had Primacy’s on my ‘18 F-150 and looked the same at 38k miles as the one I just replaced with 33k. The Primacy’s are quiet when new but don’t last long (400+_ tread wear) , aren’t great in snow, and cup on the edges. Plus, they’re almost the same price as Defenders.

I’ve decided that I’m going to also replace my Primacy XC’s with Defender LTX M/S2. I’m right in the same wheelhouse with having to replace the Primacy’s at 32k-33k. I’d be very happy with 50-60k if that turns out to be the case.

Ford noted uneven wear on my Primacy’s and recommended an alignment. I’m hesitant though because the truck “feels” fine. I’ll have to think about the alignment a little more.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of ware do you have? Is it mostly on the outer edge/shoulder of the front tires?

I’d say the outside is more worn than the inside.

I'm at 32k miles.

Toyo does make the AT3 EV version, its 275/70R18 https://www.toyotires.com/product/open-country-at3-ev/
I'm really curious to see the effciency difference in all the tires.

My original Primacy tires are up to 55K, i'm really looking at the Defenders but want the Toyo AT3's if the effciency is good.

Here is a quote from an article that itself is quoting a Michelin official:

“Torque to me: EV tires wear down faster

Electric vehicles also exert more torque, or rotational force, than equivalent gas-powered cars.

This happens for two reasons: The highly efficient electric drivetrains deliver sports-car-like acceleration, even in a boxy little compact. That means EVs put more pressure on tires than vehicles that accelerate more slowly.

EVs also exert torque in reverse through regenerative braking. This is the feature that takes energy from a car slowing down and converts it into a little extra charge for the battery.

Any type of braking applies torque on the tires, Shepherd said. But EVs do this more often, and they skip the coasting period between acceleration and braking, jumping straight from propulsion to regenerative braking.

“That additional braking does contribute to the faster wear of the tires,” Shepherd said.

This leaves an EV driver with two options: mentally prepare to replace EV tires more frequently, or invest in tires with greater “wear” or longevity.”

That's not bad in my opinion. I might just get them (Cooper Road and Trail) Thank you for detailed post!

Any thoughts on the E, SL, XL, LT versions of the Toyo Open Country AT3 EVs? LT is a stronger tire, but I won’t be rock crawling or towing much. Just light off-roading on dirt trails. Camping with a bed tent, etc. Been getting real confused with all the versions of this tire. Is the XL 116T I’m seeing advertised now the same as the SL? And LT the same as E? Any and all advice/info is welcome. About to get some of these and trying to see if I would be good with the 275/60R-20 116 XL.

Just put a new set of Defenders on my 22 Pro. $1080 installed at Discount Tire. Got 53k out of the Primacy XCs.
