I have yet to see one SW update on my truck (since I've owned it, which is fine) but since my truck is "supposed" to check for SW updates at 1AM, daily. I started snooping through my Adguard Home logs to see where/when the truck should be looking.

I've included a snapshot of where the truck's IP is looking/connecting (and when)....however, I never see a timeframe near 1AM (I've seen some at 23:30ish - 11:30PM).

Does any other network snoop know the url/dns name of the actual software update check?

P.S. wonka.ford.com, lol, wth is that?

Check the time frame of when you start the truck {pushing the [START] button, that's when phone home occurs.

It likely uses AT&T telematics connection onboard the truck. Wifi was to be called on for large deployments.

1 am is for installing the package once downloaded and requires inhibit drive conditions

Hmm, thanks for the suggestions - that changes the approach of this ask then. I assumed when you setup wifi (they, Ford) would take advantage of your network, a la Tesla.

I believe the one at the top of my picture was after I went in and acc powered the truck to try to force the SW update time screen. I toggled it on and off.

Like @TaxmanHog says, that Recurring Schedule you are referring to is not when it checks for updates. In my experience it checks whenever started. This is a very common misconception.

There are two types of Updates - "instant" and inhibited. It will download both but for inhibit updates, it will wait until that Update time to install (or you can choose now).

Here is the info screen for Recurring Update Schedule you referred to:

You will see a message like this when an inhibit update has downloaded. Note you can Update Now or Reschedule:

Thanks for the, I'll add them to my hosts file at 127.0.0.1 :)

Thanks for these - allowlisted on NextDNS!

Hopefully this helps anyone with a Pi-Hole, Adguard or other DNS resolver.

The truck seems to not use WiFi for general OTA updates and communication and this is most likely why I so rarely get updates. Cell service is spotty at my place and there is effectively no signal in my garage or driveway. A blip of signal here or there and sometimes a weak connection might happen.

I'll be taking my truck in and have the dealership update all the software at some point. If Ford ever gets off their ass and ships the module for my heated steering wheel. Ford has sent the wrong module twice and that mixed with me being out of town 2/3 of the time the past couple years, I've never got my couple recalls done or heated wheel retrofit. Really frustrating... My truck seems to receive smaller updates OK. Probably the ones it can pick up while I'm driving around. But larger updates almost never happen.

I have managed to pull a couple updates by telling the truck to check for them wile I'm plugged into DCFC. I don't know if that actually worked or if merely coincidence. Might try it again. I received the NACS / Tesla network update a year ago and then only one other small update since that I can recall.

My cell coverage isnt great here either, maybe a problem at home.

I get that want/need on the steering wheel, I bought mine used and knew about Ford adding the module back for free but luckily I chose one that still had it (a '23, to which a lot were deleted), as I knew I had a long and cold drive back home (bought it out of state).

The comments here state it checks when powering it on...how did you force-check for updates when out at a DCFC?

In the software update section where you set the schedule, there is a check for updates now. You can't force it to download updates or anything like that. And much of the battle is still hoping the Ford OTA system makes updates available for you. Mine is set to check daily at 1AM but it seems like it often does not. I don't know if it's a cellular thing completely. There are times it will hit my local network, but it definitely does not do it daily as set. Our Teslas were always reasonably quick at getting updates, but they prefer to connect via WiFi when available.

The "check now" I have only seen twice on the vehicle and I think it was only after Sync resets I did after buying the truck (or doing FDRS updates on my own). It is not shown on-screen/selectable 99% of the time.

It was stated earlier that 1AM is a schedule to install, not check for updates (unless a few select updates which are WiFi).

Thanks for sharing your experiences.
