I am updating the APIM model FDRS with a USB and the infotainment screen has said update in progress do not remove the USB drive for 12 hours. Is that normal if so how mu h longer? Would I cancel and retry? If so how do I just turn off the ignition am at risk of bricking it?

Thanks for any advice

I do not think this is normal, based on my personal FDRS updates for the Mach E and the Lightning.

Sometimes they do hang. I faintly remember that member Mike G had posted a fix / workaround procedure for this either here or in the Mach E forum. However, it was so long ago that details escape me now.

Background, as I understand it: the large update downloads function with an A and a B "boxes" inside the vehicle (these are my words). The vehicle's module pulls in the new large software into one of the two "boxes", processes it, then validates it, and then & only then, switches the system from the old software in the old "box" to the new updates software in the new "box".

I remember an IT guy explained to me years ago that the temporary new software load, while being processed and then validated, is in the "sandbox" box... the "sandbox" and the real operating box hardware being identical duplicates. Thus, once the system validates the new load the "sandbox" becomes the real operating system box and its twin becomes the new "sandbox".

Does this make sense? and I hope it is helpful for Your situation.

Separately, the next time You do a large software update thru FDRS for APIM, IPMA and other updates which demand a USB, I suggest a cheap portable SSD with a USB dongle... these are much faster for downloads from the Ford servers, and then for the subsequent uploads into the truck. My portable SSD was about $40 at MicroCenter back in 2022.
