How many digits is the emergency start code supposed to be?

I think it is twelve minimum. If I remember correctly it required me to add another character to what I normal use for a passcode and was eleven characters.

Mine is 9 digits, but 8 minimum comes to mind

I have the passcode set-up, but I do not trust it very much. Drive around the block with no phone or fob a couple of times.
How far can one drive or how long can one operate the truck with just the code?
