Because when the DC-DC converter and other supporting components need to shut down, the vehicle could never be turned back on. The 12v battery is minimally needed to black start the truck.
Be super great if they used a series of super-capacitors as they do in some jump-starter packs. for the needed 12-14v instead of the included 12v AGM battery. Technology must not yet make that a viable option to scale yet.
Lithium-ion battery chemistry probably could be more like to happen first.
In either case the 12v battery is the weakest link of mist all vehicles.

It's tough to even understand why/how a "software update" would require such a substantial power draw. 40 amps? Aren't most of these "modules" pretty just getting a ROM flash & boot cycle? Regardless, seems like amateur hours yet again from Ford to not foresee this issue when the vehicle was initially designed.

Agree with you, I watched an EV Tech on my first lightning and he kept getting during updates low voltage and hooked up a jumper pack until it drained then another one then a large 12v shop battery lol.
It was somewhat concerning. They replaced the 12v battery afterwards at n/c. This was after a HVB module 9 battery replacement also though…

Yes
All the electronics by themselves are probably not using 40 amps. But when you add in all the ancillary support systems such as cooling system pumps, fans, etc all add up very quickly. That said, I'm gonna guess some of that is not necessary and the problem could be solve by simply not operating those support systems. Of course, that would require and update. 😂
