Meanwhile our "older" technology get abandoned, and we get stuck with bugs and lack of updates.
The last update every tech project should deliver is to open up the platform for owners and the open source community to take over. Maybe we have to sign ten different waivers absolving the manufacturer of responsibility, but just let us own it once you abandon it.

You're probably right. But some of the images from the article are showing Sync4 hardware... there's a slim chance they back fill it to us, but Ford would rather see us buy a new T3 than make us happy with the LT we already have.
thats 100 percent true. I swear they want us all to rebuy instead of support us. Makes me not want to rebuy for that exact reason.

The hardware on the outside may look the same, but the guts - CPU, memory, storage, interfaces - will be redone to support the newer OS. In some ways, that may benefit those that want to retrofit the newer APIM module. Just keep in mind that it will be pricey, and updates may never come.

Is this still in the pipeline or did Ford dupe us on this one?

We recently rented a 25' explorer with the android baked in and it was much smoother dash experience. The center screen being so much smaller then the lightning doesn't even compare. However I will say having the map integrated directly into the dash is very nice touch. I wish our trucks would get this update but I highly doubt it will happen. 🤞🏻

Does anyone know if this is going to require a monthly subscription at some point down the line? I had the same concern with the Silverado EV. All these apps need a data connection. With Android Auto/Carplay just connecting to your phone, it is attached to a data plan that you are already paying for.

With the built in solutions like this, who is paying? Also, I tend to keep my vehicles for 10+ years if I can. Will the processor hold out that long with app support? It's relatively easy to replace a phone every 2-3 years when it starts slowing down and is no longer supported. Can't just replace your car every couple years "because my apps are slow". If you lease, it is less of an issue I guess.
