in Canada go hardwired. you'll pay a bit more for a hardwired charger but...

- slightly faster charging 48amps vs 40amps
- install cost will be cheaper. 50amp plugs need a neutral (3 wire), hardwired only requires 2.
- 50 amp outlets require GFCI breakers by code which are expensive and can nuisance trip. hardwired units are ok with regular cheaper breakers.

Unless you really need the 48 amps stick with the 40 amp chargers - 48/60s need to be hardwired - mention hardwiring and EV charger to an Electrician and that’s like blood in the water for a shark. A lot of jurisdictions have extra hoops/code/permit requirements for “EV Chargers” that just means you get to pay more.

A 14-50 is just a “plug” - generic code rules/permits/costs. Your EV Charger is just something you plug into it.

And in future if the EV charger fails, toss/return/plug in a new one - no electrician needed.

I am with you on this. I was able to DIY and even with the permit was a fraction of what the hard wired chargers are listed for.

not sure what the requirements are in the US but in Canada the installation will always be cheaper with a hardwired charger. Mainly because of the GFCI breaker requirement for the plug which can reach above $300cad.

Hi there. Im
New to the site and we’re very close to pulling the trigger on a 24 lariat. Just wondering what would be my best and most economical option for home charging….. I don’t think I want to shell out nearly $2000 CAD for the for pro charger…… I will need to have a 240 installed in my garage so would a “plug and play unit” be best, or have it hardwired ? Thanks for the help (not the best navigator on forums)

I strongly suggest the Tesla Universal Wall Connector. This unit future proofs you. NACS is the standard adapter now. This unit has both J1777 and NACS. never worry about having the wrong connector down the road. Your Tesla buddies will appreciate it as well.

I've had the Grizzl-e 40 Amp smart charger - it was troublesome and I use it now at my parents in dumb mode at 40 amps - it has been good that way but not flexible.

I have a 48 amp Emporia at home and it is a much more flexible charger for tracking and adjusting. It is hard-wired and 48 amps on a 60 amp breaker gets me out of a pinch when I come home late low on power. I normally charge at 32 amps to cover my daily use and the Emporia is really easy to adjust through the app as needed. To me, it was well worth the upgrade.
