Our 24 year-old Sears garden tractor has a brake pedal, a power pedal and an infinitely variable forward reverse shifter. Battery powered ignition too! I can drive circles around the Lightning. I probably get many hundreds of miles per charge unless I forget to disconnect the battery. Vampire drain or my neighbors stealing electrons. Iā€™ll get 3-4 years out of a battery. Electric clutch. No shroud so itā€™ll break a window at 50 yards. Narrow track. A hoot to mow with. The Lightning pouts. Probably wants a mower too. It could tow a gang 8, probably at 110 mph too. Gives new meaning to 40 acres and a Ford. But Iā€˜ve a ā€˜41 9N for the back 40. Itā€™s 3 pedal.

I started off with 1PD and switched it off after it engaged the break on snow and skidded a bit. With 2PD, I'm actually coasting when able, using regen to slow, and the big improvement...not flashing my brake lights every time I take my foot off the gas. not sure if I'll go back when the roads clear.
I donā€™t believe the Ford 1PD mode ever engages the friction brakes at all. But the regen is aggressive so it might feel that way on ice. We are either going to have to feather the throttle in 1PD or the brake in 2PD. Pick your poison.
I just wish it was easier to switch between them, like our i4.

Has anyone tried switching drive modes via voice command?

The Lightning 1pd drive will use the mechanical brakes instead of regen if it detects the tires slipping. I monitored the brake line pressure during our last snowstorm and when in 1pd drive and aggressively releasing the throttle you could see the brake line pressure spiking the instant the wheels started slipping. I have done similar tests in dry weather and 1pd drive only used regen.

Ford did a remarkable job keeping the feel of the truck consistent regardless of which method is slowing the vehicle.

Digging into this some more, there is some confusion about Tesla, because they have something they added in the past couple of years called "Blended Braking", but its actually kind of the reverse - it applies the friction brakes when you let off the accelerator if needed to make sure you always slow down the same predictable amount when regen is not available.

Chevy Bolt (and the old Volt) is reported to have good blended braking from the brake pedal.

There are also many hybrids that only support 2-pedal driving. The Prius hybrid seems to get mixed reviews that the transition from regen to friction brakes is not smooth.
On my 2015 Tesla model S the one pedal will not completely stop the car. It slows it down to a couple of mph and then I have to apply the brake. On my EV6 the one pedal, they call it I-pedal (eye pedal) one pedal must be a registered trade mark, anyhow it works the best of all. The brake light does not automatically come on as soon as you let off the pedal. They have figured out an algorithm that only turns on when you are actually stopping. The regen is not quite as aggressive as the F150.

Traction control will definitely use the brakes when it feels slippage in both 1PD and 2PD.

OK good info, thanks. I was wondering if they had incorporated ABS in some way but alas, here in central Minnesota we do not have typical winters anymore so I have been challenged to find a low traction surface on which to test.

I'm envious . . would die for a lil JD 20something, just don't have the property for it . .
