I called the dealership and they submitted the paperwork in late January and sent me the form.
What did they list as the sale or in service date ?

Possibly they did input it at time of sale, but forgot to print and forward you a copy of the approval!

I still suspect dealers that actually reported correctly can go in and re-print the 15400.

Have you looked at your IRS online account to see if the 2024 submission is posted there?

Merged couple of threads into this older version for consolidated tracking and reduction of redundancy.

Either the IRS is allowing late reporting or the dealer actually made the report timely and forgot to send you a copy of your 15400.

I purchased by 2024 Lightning Lariat in November, 2024. The dealership never submitted any paperwork. I saw the requirement when I started doing my taxes in mid January. I called the dealership and they submitted the paperwork in late January and sent me the form. I filed my tax return the 1st week of February and got my IRS refund about a week later. They allowed the $7500 credit I submitted.

Not sure why mine went through with the late filing by the dealership.
Well that’s good to know. I’ve filed TurboTax for the better part of the last decade. I intended on going into my dealership on Tuesday and speaking with the GM and seeing if they can submit the 15400 and supply a copy while on site. Figured if it gets rejected again, I could amend the return after it gets rejected and just mail in the copies of the 15400 and my sales contract showing the date the vehicle went into service. I feel like my situation is unique in the sense that within a 2 week timeframe of when I purchased my truck the dealership changed ownership and may be considered an exception, but why would the IRS care about exceptions or adjustments for things like that. Fingers crossed, will keep everyone updated.
Would you happen to know any other information, and did they provide you with a copy of the 15400 form? Were the dates and details the same as your sales contract or did they alter the dates to reflect something different? I feel as if I remember reading somewhere that the IRS provided an extension for dealerships until Feb 15. That may have been for the previous calendar year though and not 2024-25.

It was for early calendar year 2024 sales reports, the system was malfunctioning for a period of time, and many dealers were also late registering.

Thanks for posting.

I'll push my dealer harder to try submitting to see if it works. But maybe they did it correctly and only provided the copy in January.

This is excellent to see, I know it doesn't fit the tight constraints of 72 hour reporting, but this loosens up the ability for dealers to GET ON BOARD and report missed transactions.

Thanks everybody, I may actually try to make a phone call on Monday prior to my visit on Tuesday and see if they can submit the 15400. Time is obviously of the essence with these types of things, so I'd imagine the sooner I can get the dealership to do their job. The better, also shame on me for not doing research on the credit prior to the time of purchase, this may or may not wind up being just an extremely expensive lesson learned, and shame on me for planning my budgeting around receiving the credit.

That's the rule.

I would like to see a single DENIAL FROM THE IRS to an individual taxpayer.
I just got denial of my tax return for that reason. Here it is.
The dealer never reported the sale, called them regarding, and emailed many times, assured that it was taken care of.
Purchase used EV in September 2024. Now I am out 4,000.00

SA-F8936-048 - The e-File database indicates this vehicle was not purchased during the tax period of the return.
SA-F8936-047 - Schedule A (Form 8936) credit amount does not match the type of credit reported in e-File database

Someone asked if the vehicle was showing up on the IRS website. This is what I found. However, there's no date when the dealer actually submitted the paperwork.

Sweet. Thanks. Wish it would show the date so we could prove that your dealership turned it in late and it still worked... but can't control the IRS... Glad for your outcome.

My dealership seemed like they said it would not work to turn it in now... But I don't know if they tried or are just going by the rules, sometimes rules and how the programer wrote the system are two different things. They owe me a phone call on Monday

This is great to see, all that matters is that the data is reported and can be used to validate your 8936 and status of tax credit, whether it was credited at date of sale or not and paid to you now is all that matters.
