Agreed, it is getting a bit emotional here in Canada now. After the next four years, I hope we are all still talking. The next thing Canada will be doing is building a nice beautiful walk along our boarder with all the extra steel we will have. It will be a beautiful sight and it will be paid for by tariffs on the US. LOL Not!

You're saying it makes sense to protect the auto industry with tariffs even though it means higher prices to consumers (because we don't let cheap Chinese cars in).

But we shouldn't tariff steel/aluminum, because we import 70% and making those inputs more expensive makes US cars and other goods less competitive globally?

But when we did make 100% of steel locally, it would have made sense then to tariff imports to protect that industry (using your auto industry argument), even though the result would have been higher prices for steel (because we wouldn't have let the cheap Chinese steel)?

Do you see a problem in that logic?
The use of Tariffs are to stop artificial subsidized dumping. The Chinese government is subsidizing their auto industry by dump cheap EV's into the world at a loss to crush any new start up competitors before they can going. That's when you want a Tariff.

There is a reason the US seeded aluminum to Canada. Quebec has an abundance of hydro electricity which is required for aluminum smelters. For that reason they can produce it more efficiently and cheaper. That is not artificial dumping and the point of trade. US industries and consumers enjoy lower costs and their manufactured products are more competitive in a global market. In return the US does stuff that is way cheaper to produce there and Canada benefits in the same way. Win win.

Placing a 25% tax on your own industries that need steel and aluminum that you don't have is going to accomplish what exactly. Do you really think some Trillionaire is going to build mines, smelters and major power plants to get aluminum production up and running when they know they won't be competitive globally. Its not going to happen and all its going to accomplish is kill off other industries that are using steel and aluminum.

Anyways. I am going to self moderate. Although it's not too bad (yet), it's getting a bit political in here, and I'm not helping the situation. In the end, I can't control what our governments do. When it's time to buy a new truck here in Canada, I'll see what's available and do what's best for me. I've never been sad buying a new truck so I'm pretty sure what ever that next truck is will make me happy too.

Try again. If you read my response 20x you might eventually understand it.
Your failure to create an accurate argument is not others failure to understand.

You said it the product was made 100% locally, again, if its 100% locally there is no foreign product to apply a tariff against. The childish response just proves you are just mad for the bad argument being called out.

Generally most Americans really appreciate our neighbors in Canada. It's unfortunate that our leader is creating these issues. If Canada had the same weather that we have here in Florida I would consider moving to Canada.

With the new Tariffs coming into effect in the US, I imagine that both Mexico and Canada will be getting Chinese EV cars and Trucks. Will the cost of the US base EV's and ICE cars be affordable for the average perosn or will they need to come to Canada and buy one of our Chinese EV's that they will get?
Back to the OP. I for one hope Canada does the right thing and invites Chinese EV's in. I will make the easy drive to Vancouver BC and check out the Mona MO3. It will cost 1/2 of the Model 3.
