It's sad that this is my first ever post on this forum, but I've been lurking on here since June, months before I got my Lightning.

Didn't get to post about it sooner since I've been so busy talking with insurance and trying to talk with my bodyshop. But this happened two days ago...

Slowed to a stop for a turning driver in front of me and was rear-ended...

Gonna need a full new bedside, tail light and bumper cap. Along with all the glueing and riveting that comes along with that.

I've seen several posts of Lightnings being involved in accidents, including a head-on total on another forum 2 days ago. Makes me wonder about whether people gawking at the vehicle has something to do with it.

With only about 8000 or so currently on the road, the percentage of accidents seems high.

I might say there could be some validity to your point, I wonder if someone on the forum can aggregate the data and run the numbers to see exactly what percentage of Lightnings have been involved in accidents that were not the owner's fault.

But I think in my case, it was in all likelihood just a distracted driver. She didn't even know what the Lightning was, and in the dashcam footage she looked quite distracted and essentially didn't even slow down.

If you go to a Tesla forum you will see that every other post is about being rear ended( exaggeration).

The issue is that we can accelerate and brake faster than other cars: Especially with a one pedal driving.

What I see is that cars behind me tend to try to accelerate the same as me, but they do not have the breaking power to slow down as fast as me.

The best way to avoid these types of situations Is to stay away from danger: either leave them in the dust or just stop and let them pass.

people either are jerks or they have no clue about driving. So just give yourself enough space to account for that. It is easier to do it in an f150 than a tesla :)

Ahh I see, yeah I get that for sure, but in my case, I never use one-pedal drive (I hate it) and I slowed down as gradually as I could for the driver in front of me turning. While faster acceleration and braking could be the cause of a lot of EV involved accidents, I guess in my case I just got unlucky 😕

in your case, they could just have been staring at your truck: Beautiful Truck! I believe that is one of the best colors for the Lightning.
I hope you get it back soon!

one pedal has many positives, so do not give up on it. I just think that ford should have put a button on the gear lever for quick access as opposed to have it on the screen.

Sorry that happened to you, and not that it changes anything but it looks like she gave more damage than she got at least.

Ask for all your old parts. Not kidding, wife had someone pull out in front of her in 2020 and our 18 Platinum held up well, but it was still 11k in damage. Here's a pic. I sold the damaged headlight, 1 tab broke and scratched, damaged Grille, scratch, on EBay. The body shop was just recycling or throwing away the parts. I asked for them. In Florida you can do this.
I also visited the body shop to check they were using all Ford OEM parts. They did an amazing job and when we sold it we showed pics of the damage and buyers could see it was grille, headlight, bumper and trim, hood r and r paint. Allowed them to see no frame or engine suspension. The other car, a Hyundai Tucson, was total loss. The other driver just pulled out from a stop sign and wife T-boned it. It sucks, but it will be fine. The taillight is probably 800-$1200 alone and can be repaired by people that buy these replace lenses and resell. Good luck.

I'm sure there's a brake light sensor based on deceleration rate. It's really common on EVs. If that isn't working, it would be a major recall that would make the news.

I've noted on my truck that the slightest amount of deceleration causes the brake lamps to come on, easier to see this in the evening and foggy nights.

A good friend of mine has had the bad luck of accidents when being a courteous and considerate driver, his new motto is "Never be nice" and keep moving along....

Please DM me where you saw a totaled Lightning...I'm looking to buy another battery pack so we can keep our test vehicle alive.

I firmly believe the brake lights work when they should, but that is a very nice thing I miss from my Tesla - they light up on the driving visualization when they come on - you know what is going on and there is no guessing.
