Read a lot on here before deciding so figured I’d share some pics and feedback.

Installed:
  • Hellwig 7905 front swaybar - this is chromoly and larger diameter than OEM for reduced sway
  • Mevotech TXMS408141 front swaybar end links - greaseable and look a bit stronger than OEM
  • Bilstein 47-323841 front pair shocks/springs 6112 - much improved dampening, handling & off-road capability, adjustable height perch's
  • KYB SM5727 Mount Kit - OE Style front top hats for the Bilsteins

Overall install was pretty straight forward. If you were to do just the sway bar it would be super easy. Suspension is a little more involved but not too hard. I didn’t want to disassemble the factory suspension so I bought new top hats. I bought the truck used and it already had a leveling puck lift in the front so I removed that. I left the Bilsteins at position 0 so they are “factory” height but probably a tiny bit lower since they are for an ICE F-150.

Factory suspension for me (with puck lift) was very floaty and damping was pretty bad, lots of nose dive. Highway wind turbulence was very noticeable. Coming from a performance Model S this was a massive change.

After install I could feel the difference right away, just backing out of the garage. Truck is more planted, responsive, solid feeling, level in the turns. Extremely reduced sway and significantly improved damping; almost no diving in the nose with 1 pedal or heavy braking. It feels to me a lot more like a typical sports car would, not over the top, just much more confidence inspiring. No problem taking turns like off ramps at moderate speed, feels completely in control. Wind turbulence on the highway was drastically reduced - I don’t feel like I’m constantly being pushed around. Going over speed humps was pretty impressive, I tested at few at 40mph (larger more gradual speed humps) and the front of the truck barely cared at all. I pushed it until the rear was getting a little bouncy. Factory suspension I would have never done that, the truck would have pogo sticked itself into a telephone pole.

In short, for about $1500 or so this was well worth it (installed myself). Now I just need to decide on leaving the rear suspension alone or using a perch drop to lower it slightly. I’d love to put something aftermarket in the rear but all the proper solutions are thousands of dollars as there is not much demand..

Nice. 6112s are on my list too.

Rumor has it the rear struts are just 2018 F150 front struts. I have debated getting a set to see. If so a slight lowering may be just a clip change away.

Maybe a dumb question. How easy is the sway bar install? Does it require a lift?

Yea I’ve seen that mentioned as well. I imagine the top hats/springs would be different.

I used a jack and jack stands to do all of this. The bar itself would be very quick & easy. Undo the links on each side, undo the two nuts on the U brackets for each side and slide it out. Slide new one in, replace nuts and end links.

Looks like you had a level kit. By replacing the front suspension with the bilsteins, it seems you lost a little bit of that leveling effect?

Interesting mod, thanks. Two questions:

1. What was the mileage on the truck at shock change?

2. How worn were the OEM shocks You removed? Hand-compressible? (yes my old Fusion rear OEM shocks were actually hand-compressible when I changed them for Bilstein B6s). Body-weight compressible? No noticeable wear?

Yea that was intentional. Was getting terrible range and part of it was the lift. Instead I’ll probably drop the rear about 1.5” to compensate.

23,000 miles. They seemed pretty OK. I didn’t take them apart so I can’t say for sure. For how floaty the truck was I would have thought they were worn pretty good but almost everyone seems to complain about the factory suspension so they are probably fine.

Gotcha. Your level kit looked a little bit higher than mine. I don't know maybe the tyre/wheel difference. I do not have that wind turbulence or floaty effect you have. At what speed were you experiencing it?
On the other hand I do feel like the dampening would need a little tweak.

What about replacing the rear shocks with Bilstein 6112 also?

Agree I think it was mostly the damping. Pretty much all speeds but then again I’m coming from a sporty sedan so it was a drastic difference for me. If I had a truck prior then maybe it would have felt more normal.

It would be amazing if they made a combo for the lightning. Since these are made for the gas version of our trucks they are only interchangeable in the front, not the rear. Our Lightnings use independent rear suspension, looks similar to the front setup. The gas versions use rear leaf springs and shocks, so it’s a different layout. I did however look at front 6112s for a 2008 Ford F150 as the front belltech 25001 drop strut from that year does work on the rear of the lightning. Might be able to get those to bolt up but not sure I want to be the guinea pig, will see. If they can bolt up it’s still a risk to see if the valving and spring rate are a good match for the rear. I ran some analysis using AI and the chances seemed decent it would be ok. I’ve also thought about grabbing the eibach sport shocks for the rear and using the factory springs with a perch relocator to lower about 1.5” and hopefully get better damping but there isn’t a lot of info on how eibach shocks compare to factory. I might email Eibach. The struts have a 0” loft or 1” lift setting. So if you put the Eibach sport springs on them but used the 1” setting it would only drop 1.9” instead of 2.9”. Or if you used the lift springs which add .3” you could use a perch relocator and drop maybe 1.5” or so. I’m not sure if those combos would work properly tho so I want to ask them. TWS makes drop in rear fox coilovers but they are almost 4K, unsure if they can lower the ride at all. Icon has their kit on sale right now, rears are just over 2K. I’m not super adverse to spending the money but it just seems like a lot for rear suspension. There is probably a combo out there that will fit and be an upgrade vs. factory for a fraction of that cost.
