Is mine the only state that punishes folks for buying an EV?

Virginia robs EV owners, I pay $128 per year in HUF (Highway Use Fees), I own 4 EV's and pay $512 per year on top of registration, annual county and city property tax, and ridiculous HOT lane tolls.

Virginia HUF Robbery Chart

I have trained my kids to call it the Taliban Road Tax. My Lightning on a good day gets about 60 eMPG, but I get charged like it's getting 128 eMPG....

An easy way to fix this is to just tax tires more... the more miles you drive the more the Taliban collect..
Unless my understanding of the HUF and/or my calculations are mistaken, based on their assumed 11,600 miles, I end up paying about the same as my ICE equivalent for driving the same roads (with a heavier vehicle). Apparently we do have the option of paying per mile but that seems like a hassle to me.

sw engineering manager,
I am always amazed when people complain about taxes that are used to directly pay for roads.
Roads are one of the most visible shared government infrastructure things we all use nearly every day.
Rare to see anybody complaining that we should maintain our roads less.

Texas rewards us by charging a new annual $200 per EV fee. Should be based on miles driven per year, which they have via the annual safety inspection process and could bill with annual registration. @ 15mpg, you've got to drive 8,000 miles to pay that much road tax. Plus 8.25% sales tax on electricity
I did the math for myself and it is basically a wash. Remember, you have to add the Fed part of that gas tax in for your calculations, for Texas thats 38.4 cents total per gallon, 20 cents for texas and 18.4 cents for the Fed. If you just do the math on 20 cents, it looks like we are getting hosed.

FWIW I DO think EVs should be taxed based on mileage. Also, Texas hasn't raised that 20 cent tax in more than like 30 years! lmao

That is a good point about fed taxes, because I didn't consider that previously. I feel better about the $200/year now. Looks like 5 cents of the state part goes to public education. California pays 67 cents combined (yikes).

Here's an interesting read on the Texas gas taxes - https://www.dot.state.tx.us/ttf2011/Presentations/GasTaxPlacemat.pdf

If my math is right, here is a breakdown of how many miles the ICE 4WD F150s would have to drive to pay $200 in gas taxes annually. Combined MPG came from AI for 2023 4WD Lariat, so it may not be 100% accurate. Looks like anywhere from 9k-12k miles annual for the ICE equivalents to pay $200 year in gas taxes.

Annual Miles Driven Estimate = $200/($0.384/Combined MPG):
  • 4WD @ 17mpg - 8,854 miles
  • 3.3L V6 @19mpg- 9,896 miles
  • 2.7L Ecoboost V6 @18MPG - 9,375 miles
  • 3.5L Hybrid V6 @ 23mpg - 11,979

Basically a WASH if you drive enuf miles/year. If you drive less, then it's a HOSE job. Add Sales Tax and you're talking another $90-$100/year. The wife just bot a Mach-e & drives less than 2,000 miles/year - another bonus tax. Yes, it should be mileage/vehicle size based to be close to "fair".

And you think the boys in Austin are going to fork over ANY of that $$ to the Feds ? Highly suspect they have zero obligation to do so 'cause it's a registration tax & you know how much Texas respects the Federales. Also a nickel's supposed to go to school support, but that's getting poured into the Rio Grande to make us safer.
