Is mine the only state that punishes folks for buying an EV?

Oklahoma also has an additional tax for registering an EV. I think it was about $150/yr

KY is no friend to any that registers a vehicle, and that goes twice for an EV owner. $160 if fully electric and $60 or $80 for a hybrid.

I would never complain about paying my fair share, but I havenā€™t driven more than 6,000 miles a year since retiring several years ago. That $160 would pay for a lot more gas tax than 6,000 miles worth. šŸ™

Checking in from Ohio! We pay an extra $200 for registration since the state loses out on our gas taxes. It does seem anti-progress to do that, doesn't it?

On the other hand I buy a lot of boat and offroad gas that DOES have tax on it that I can't remove, but I shouldn't be paying on that. Somehow I don't get to write that off either.

No, it does not. To pay the EV $200 tax that is equivalent of 714 gallons of gas. I didnā€™t burn thru that much gas with my ICE. Just take away the gas tax and penalize every vehicle $200. Another thing, you are penalized on value and upgrade. You can drive a 1978 LTD for $10 a year, but if you retire that ole girl and upgrade to lighter and more efficient vehicleā€¦boom.
What is the incentive to upgrade to a less polluting car? Still four tires but I have to pay so much more?
I did my 2023 taxes today. All done except adding clean vehicle. Was getting state a refund. Added form (8936) to include EV, helped on federal, crushed and now owe on state. Not EV friendly.

You know, I have to report back on this! When I went to buy my plate I told them I had a 2023 Ford F150. That was apparently plenty good enough for them. I just paid the regular tag fee for non-com truck plates. It does not seem they have any kind of a VIN check program in place, and frankly I'm not going to be the one to put them on notice. $200 saved for the good guys!

California charges $175 for EV registration but my entire registration I paid for my '22 Lightning was almost $1000 !!!

Someone is ripping someone...
The high cost is the weight charge in California.

In South Dakota, the annual EV fee is $50. Our Fuel tax is $.42. Average fuel economy here is 21mpg.
That means for my average usage of 20,000 miles per year, the fuel tax is about $400. I will happily pay $50.

Good!!
I tried that in Texas and it didnā€™t work. I still got hammered with a $200 fee.

Tax fraud is a crime against your fellow tax payers. Kind of disgusting that you brag about it.

Tennessee currently has an EV fee of $200. I will be going up to $274. They did a study and found that the average TN driver spends $274 on state and federal gas taxes. So I suppose it's reasonable. The downside is that it's based on averages. If you drive fewer than the average miles, or instead of an EV you'd have a vehicle with better fuel economy than average, you're paying more.

The thing that gets me is that they will be indexing the EV fee to inflation, but the TN gas tax isn't indexed (and hasn't be increased in decades).

The state isn't bringing in enough money for roads. Politically they would have a hard time increasing the gas tax, so they stick it to EV owners since there aren't enough of us to complain load enough.

[Seems we are forgetting to include the federal taxes on gas which we don't pay to register EVs versus the state tax that is now part of EV registration. When you add the two taxes together and compare the cost for gas the picture can change dramatically.

This is not to say either of those highway taxes actually go to fund roads as the majority of our tax dollars (over 50%) go into another persons pocket and are not used to the benefit of all citizens.

Here is the breakdown by state.

right, and the only way any of these states can push out EV Fees is by using an 'average', which they, in only their wisdom, come to a decision about how much that will be.

I'm not sure why DC Fast Charging can't be taxed in the same way fuel stations are taxed for every gallon of gas they sale: if every kwh of power provided to an ev carried a EV fuel tax fee, then it would be more 'fair' to all owners...
they, though, would then complain that the state can't monitor and push a tax on your
'at-home' charging, since that's really the larger portion of your charging costs...

we also have the joy, currently, of paying ALL of our EV Fuel Tax fee ALL AT ONCE, with no way to 'average' it out over each gas station stop, like every other vehicle owner.

GEORGIA is roughly $200 per year... translating to about $16 monthly, or maybe 1.5cents per mile, if you drive 12,000 per year, etc.. it is what it is, for the time being, but I think we'll see a change in the future, as the states start to see more and more opportunities to tax the DC Fast Charging, rather than simply 'guessing' what miles EVs are driving on their roads...

Seems to me that a mileage driven each year would be a much fairer solution. I live in KY which is not EV friendly, to say the least and I drive about half the average driver so Iā€™m paying much more than my ICE counterpart.

Iā€™ve just had to chalk it up to the price I have to pay to fight climate change, corporate Oil and of course the fun of driving this awesome truck.
