I've noticed the same thing. I keep my hands at the bottom of the steering wheel, and it does not detect them if I am not giving any input. It really sucks because the centering works very well. It defeats the purpose of having lane-centering when you have to jerk the steering every 10-15 seconds to avoid this warning. Its more work to keep the alert from coming up than just centering the vehicle yourself. When using the Lane Centering feature does anyone else keep getting the message to put your hands on the steering wheel even though they are on the wheel (except when taking this picture).
Do you have to have a death grip on the wheel? Where are the sensors? My 2016 just required one hand with a lite squeeze.
Hopefully, Ford will come up with an update.
The only workaround I have found is to apply a little bit of weight to one side of the steering wheel. Basically, slightly pull the steering wheel to one side, which feels very unnatural, like I am trying to drive off the road. Or let your arm rest on it like a few others have described. I tried a few clamps on the steering wheel, and that didn't work. I imagine that a 5 lbs weight on one side would do the trick, but I'm not sure how safe that solution would be.
