There's a little difference with the Mach-E and Lightning.

The Mach-E has a whole assembly plant with one product it can ramp up.

The Lightning is not only constrained by battery availability, they designed the Final assembly building under the idea that they wouldn't sell very many. It can only run at, maybe, 13 to 14 JPH. It's gonna take a bit of magic to see large production numbers until the plant in Tennessee is done.

14 JPH x 6240 hours = 87,350

2022 Lightning (Ordered 6/19, delivered 10/28/22)
Regrading the Explorer EV:

"Additionally, Ford informed suppliers that the vehicles are being moved from the Cuautitlan assembly plant to a yet-to-be-determined location, according to the memo.

Ford North America COO Lisa Drake, in an interview Friday, declined to comment on plans for the upcoming Explorer and Aviator EVs. "

You can bet if the BBB passes in some way with a USA or UAW boost they will move production to the US.

F150, Corvette, Bolt EV,
They also raised the prices across the models.

Dang, $15 for two tacos today make the price of a car look cheap.

The EV Explorer/Aviator was originally supposed to go to Flat Rock. Cuautitlan is on the smaller side, and with the increased numbers Ford wants out of Mach-E, they would have never worked there. They could always put them back into Flat Rock, or possibly put them into Oakville. The late December 2024 launch would fit in with the plant retool and EV Edge.

Actually, this is terrible news for Lightning reservation holders in one important respect - every Mach E that is produced supplants one of Ford’s 200k available tax credits. One less credit for a Lightning buyer. This assumes that the BBB legislation’s EV credit proposals are dead, which seems to be the case at this juncture.

I don't think it matters. Whether the Mach-E production was increased or not, the tax credit world have probably started to be reduced by the beginning of 2023. Too many products eating into what remains of the 200k limit now.

Like most bad legislation BBB will be pinched out at midnight Christmas Eve and the grift will continue. If it does die I may just pick up a Maverick Hybrid. Need to see B+P and do some math first tho..

Huh? 200K is a real number. Every Mach-E that cock-blocks a Lightning is one less Lightning credit. It is a zero-sum game here.

Completely agreed, but I think the point is that without Build Back Better that vast majority of us will get a reduced or no credit either way.

It all depends on when they are sold. No matter what, by the end of next year Ford would have reached 200k. Even without the Lightning. And even is the Mach-E production wasn't increased.

You do know that the rebate doesn't end exactly at vehicle 200k, right?

  • The full amount of the EV qualifying tax credit is in place DURING the entire calendar quarter in which 200,000 EVs are sold by a manufacturer, AND through the subsequent quarter.
  • Then the tax credit amount is reduced by 50% for the next 2 quarters.
  • The credit is reduced again to 25% of the original amount for the subsequent 2 quarters.
  • At that point the credit expires completely.
Tesla was at the 50% point when I purchased mine, $3,750 plus OR's $2,500. Hopefully OR will up its EV credit also.

It ends in the next two quarters, ratably. The Mach-E ramp-up is happening way faster/sooner because it is in place. Ford is already close. The Mach-E ramp could move the end up by one or two full quarters. My last Model X received a 25% credit due to the Tesla phase-out at the end of 2019, so I am quite familiar with the process. Ford is already close. Ramping the MachE WILL impact Lightning reservation holders, no question.
