Yes but warranty law gets complicated, and so is the Lightning.
If the after market part/battery is not an exact equivalent, like a battery with a different AH rating or terminal voltage, or having a terminal that is a different shape/configuration and a related part won't fit properly and may come loose, etc., then it could be easy for them to say it caused the problem and state the reason why as being "it's not an exact equivalent in voltage, amperage, size and/or shape."
Then the ball is in your court to disprove it.
And what about the warranty from the non-OEM part/battery? Will it cover any damage to the Lightning BMS if it occurs? Or if the Lightning BMS causes the non-OEM battery to fail, then who pays to replace it? Will you have to prove Ford caused the failure? Will you need a lawyer to read and interpret the warranty language and the case law?
Lawyers can get expensive if Ford wants to fight it (I am a patent atty). So can the repairs. Is there a non-OEM LV BMS component and repair shop with the expertise to install it?
Don't get me wrong, I hate the idea of these specialized 12v batteries - our Prius has one and it is pricey to replace, but they made the space where it goes so small almost nothing else fits there.
They've got us by the -fill in the blank-.
But it is a lot cheaper in the log run to stick with the OEM recommended battery.
So until my 3 warranty years are up, I am not fooling around with a different 12v battery.
No, I am not happy with the issues with the 12v battery and updates, the allowing the AGM to go below 50% SOC, etc.
But the BMS for the 12v complicates things when replacing the battery with a non-OEM battery that is not an exact comparable equivalent (identical in all aspects) battery. Too much could go wrong.
Maybe there will be a class action law suit about the LV battery issues?
Maybe after the 3 year warranty expires and if other Lightning owners have replaced their battery with a better one that works without issue, I'll do that too.
Until then...
