For the Tesla charge stations, my understanding is one needs the J1772 adapter to use them if you have a Lightning? Picking up, hopefully, today a Flash in CA and will drive about 350 back home. Have the Plugshare app at the ready but no J1772 adapter at present.
No. You need a different adapter. J1772 is for destination chargers, not SuperChargers.

A2ZEV makes the Typhoon Pro adapter for Tesla SuperChargers. It sells for $189.00 ($170.10 after using code FORDFORUM). They also sell the Stellar adapter, which is for Tesla Destination chargers (such as hotels, private homes). It sells for $111. If you pick use the dropdown menu on the Typhoon Pro page to pick the Stellar adapter also, the combined price is $270.00 ($243.00 with code FORDFORUM). In other words, it’s only $72.90 more for the destination charging adapter. They are currently shipping quickly. I have both adapters and have used both many times. Well there are Tesla stations that are unsupported and apparently some turned off from non Tesla. The ford and Tesla apps can show you the ones supported but I have had various luck with v4s that show up but don’t charge.

Thank you for the reply. One thing though - you NEED a J1772 adapter (whether AtoZ or to use the Tesla charge stations, correct?
There are AC adapters to be used at slow destination chargers.
There are DC adapters to be used on compatible super chargers
There are Super Chargers which have built in Magic Dock DC adapters.

Install the Tesla app, configure a profile for non-tesla vehicles, locate Tesla sites which are available on your path home that take advantage of magic dock until you get a Ford adapter or third party adapter.
Thank you very much for that information! I did not realize there were multiple adapters such as those you mentioned. The plugshare app does appear to be able to select specific charge networks and I can select the Super Chargers. As to the adapter, seems like 'just' having the J1772 will only allow some charge stations to work? Is that what you're indicating?

I’m not the most knowledgeable on all the adapters but I know you need a super charger compatible one for high voltage which is the A2Z or the Ford one (major backlog).

As to the adapter, seems like 'just' having the J1772 will only allow some charge stations to work? Is that what you're indicating?
Avoid using J1772 terminology, it is used to AC charge our Lightnings, of course it's integrated into the CCS1 style connection, if you're concerned with for DC FAST charging for a long road trips, a NACS to CCS1 adapter is required as pointed out several times above.......

The Tesla app will let you configure the specifics of how you will charge, but you need to bring your own NACS to J1772 adapter with you to "Destination Charger" locations, most do not have adapters unless a private host lends one to you for the visit.

Here is a view of AC charging on the Tesla app, configuration and search results

Set up 0-72 charging---------- where you see a lock symbol, these are private use, the host may let you use the equipment, where you see single lightning bolt are slow AC charging open to public for a fee.

This is how you set up your tesla app for fast DC charging on [No NACS] vehicles if you do not have an NACS->CCS1 adapter, ie. Magic Dock adapter is built into the Tesla cabinet.

Thanks for that detailed explanation! Seems like if you're in a pinch, you'll use what is closest to your location and will most likely be the 0-72 due to their extensive network. But on long trips, you'd want to adjust your timing to take advantage of the DC charging ports. As to the adapters: NACS -> J1772 adapter = AC/slower charging; NACS -> CCS1 adapter = DC/faster charging?

Ah, got it. So interesting(?) observation on these two (and I suspect similar ones) - the NACS -> CCS1 seems to have its upper configuration just like the NACS -> J1772. So do you need both of these adapters or can you use the CCS1 charger for J1772 charging too? Looks like the yellow area you circled with those two holes in the front on the CCS1 adapter is an additional feature but would it preclude you from using it at a J1772 charger? I know it's "only" an additional $110 for the J1772 adapter but, is it necessary?

The yellow highlights indicate the CCS1 DC pin's they are bus-barred to the NACS pins on the opposite end.

In the J1772 connector the AC 240v pins are wired/bus-bar to the NACS pins, mode switch in a Tesla occurs in the vehicle. While on CCS vehicles the power flow distinct and isolated.

Is the J1772 connector needed? IMHO no, I don't have one, I'm only relying on FAST CHARGING with my Ford branded NACS to CCS adapter, other members have pointed out the benefits of having a J1772 adapter especially nice when you come across inexpensive & free slow charging.

A lot of us make this overly complicated but it really is simple.
1) use Tesla app(free) set to other vehicle and have an super charger adapter
2) do not trust Ford nav, use Google or Apple maps.
3) Tesla destination chargers are slow, but good on trips, you need a specific adapter, the super charger adapter won't work.

I have found Apple Maps to be very useful. I actually select “different vehicle” as opposed to F150 Lightning. Apple Maps displays total mileage on the GOM. Using my kWH multiplier, it seems almost foolproof. Apple Maps is WAAAAYYYY to conservative in my opinion but the different vehicle setting still allows me to see pertinent info and get an accurate calculation. My cross Virginia /Tennessee trip was a piece of cake using this method.

2024 flash with 3k miles. Charges great at home on Tesla wall charger (12-15kw)


Ok so I have now charged or tried to charge at 4-5 fast charging and have had a pretty inconsistent experience. I’m curious if this is the norm:

Telsa v4 - pretty new near my house. Didn’t even have numbers on the stall. Tried this one twice at different times but never got the stalls to charge. The first time the adapter came out, second time no adapter but used by a2z.

Tesla v3 - easiest one, plug and play book charged 75kw consistently.

Tesla v3 - on the road, zero other cars charging. Goes from 125kw to 51kw after 10 minutes and therefore pretty slow.

finally a brand new electrify America that says it’s rated for 350kw. 1 other car and they are getting 150kw, best I could get was 50kw and it took an hour. Ugh.

is there possibly something wrk g with my truck? I’ve tested enough cases where I would think I’ve eliminated variables.

It does sound like something might be restricting the truck from accepting more than 50 KW

Here’s another brand of destination charge adapter. Free charging as I’m a guest at the Holiday Inn Express in Johnson City, Tennessee. Only one charger, but it works well.
There are lots of the level 2 adapters. Never heard of Latough before. Sold by:

It works. Any port in a storm. I do have A2Z’s Pro and the destination charger extension cord. Almost needed it today as there was a homesteader parked where a Tesla would need to be. I left him/her/them a gentle note.
