My Lightning is 2 months old. I don't flog it as I try to maximize miles/kWh. I make complete stops before I move the shift lever. A few weeks ago the lever got stuck in "D." I turned the engine power off and the lever moved by itself into P. I just brushed it off as a one time thing. Well this morning as I was dropping off my daughter at school, I tried to put the truck into reverse from "D" and the shift lever would not budge. I stopped the truck and tried to shift into "P" but it would still not budge. So I just shut off the engine while in "D" and engaged the parking brake. Walked daughter to her class, came back and tried to get shifter back into "P" but still stuck in "D" and the "D" light was flashing. After trying different things for 30 minutes w/o tearing off the shifter, I stepped on the brake pedal (after numerous times), and all of a sudden the shifter moved by itself into "P." Very dangerous situation and what a PITA for a new truck. I found the thread below which is exactly the same issue and the original poster's F150 is not a Lightning, so I don't think this issue is specific to Lightnings.

They've had problems with the motorized shifter since the ICE truck launched in 2020. I would take it to the dealer and explain what happened. They'll probably order a new one without even looking at it.

Hi there! I can look into your Lightning's concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Lightning's VIN?

If it happens again, before it gets repaired, trying opening the driver's door without your seat belt fastened. It is supposed to automatically go into park in that situation.

Thanks, but I did that and it didn't work.

I am now having a few problems with the gear shift on my truck. First, if I want to go from Park to reverse, the first click does not engage reverse. The truck merely stays in Park. Additionally, the same thing happens when going fr9m reverse to drive and from drive to reverse. For whatever reason, it seems as though the truck forgets what position the gear shift lever is in once the current gear is deselected. Finally, the the button to lower the shifter flat does not work. At most, you will hear a clicking noise.

I would get it in to your dealer ASAP before it fails completely and you're stranded somewhere.

I agree. I charged it to 80% and am parking it until I can get it to the dealer. In the interim, I am going to record what is going on and email it to the service manager.

I appreciate the offer, but I now have the truck back — all fixed.

Please let me know if you still need the VIN and dealership for tracking purposes.
