Plug and charge is super convenient. I really wish I could do the monthly membership when I need it and attach it to my VIN so that plug and charge would work and charge me the membership rate. Right now I have plug and charge turned on when charging very rarely but when doing a road trip I disable plug and charge, subscribe to the membership and activate chargers through the Tesla app.It only takes 30 seconds but itā€™s just one more annoying thing to deal with. Considering the station gets your VIN when you plug in, I would hope it is just a matter of time before they make it so you can subscribe to plug and charge through Tesla. My guess would be there is an internal battle between incentivizing tesla sales because charging on the network with a tesla is easier than non-tesla and incentivizing other EV owners charging at tesla sites because I would guess they are making a lot of revenue on charging and itā€˜s probably steadier income stream and more steady growth than car sales. Hopefully the latter wins out and plug and charge starts to just work with or without membership.

I just finished a 1500 mile Christmas road trip and used almost exclusively Tesla stations. The only times I used EA was one rest stop that had both Tesla and EA stations and I chose EA since I needed 6 charging stops that day and tesla membership only allows 5 charges per day, as well as EA at my destination (Chicago) since thereā€™s not a lot of tesla stations open to non-tesla in the city. So both membership fees lowered my total cost. Which reminds me, I need to cancel those memberships before the month runs outā€¦
