Looks like we may be out alone as early adopters for longer than we may have thought.

“……..Reductions at the Marshall, Michigan plant are part of Ford's plans announced last month to cut or delay about $12 billion in previously announced EV investments. The company will also postpone construction of another electric vehicle battery plant in Kentucky.”

FORD: Whelp, we're selling out of Lightnings, but the MachE is a luxury car in a market where people can't afford new luxury cars. Should we make more F150L Pros? Maybe bring back a cheap Focus EV for people on a budget? What about making an EV version of the Aerostar for people who need something smaller than an E-transit and seats in the back?

Nope, let's just declare EVs a failure and scale back production.

Reading comprehension...

They are only investing $2B in the plant for now. Yes, that is a huge failure and the world is ending.

Exactly. I see that as a win in a slowing economy that they are still investing domestically at all. The just as easily could have bailed on the USA completely and moved the plant to the southern “North American” country to still allow their EVs to be eligible.

That is exactly right. They need to figure out a sweet spot where they have a basic EV that competes with the Bolt type EV and maybe the Model 3, but definitely the model 2.

While I know everyone seems obsessed with 300+ range on YouTube, to keep the cost down have it have a 150 mile average usable non-winter range but still able to DC fast charge for for the majority of the charge curve around 150 kW. That would allow for a smaller battery and a 20-30 minute charge so it could still do some road trips, although with a lot of stops compared to higher priced cars.

Eh, the silver lining is that the federal money for the massive charger rollout is already allotted, so it will just be easier to find an open charger for that much longer ;)

It is about options and particularly affordable options.

If 150 miles doesn’t work for your use case, buy the “extended range” options.

Most people don’t drive one way more than 150 miles every day. That’s just the reality of life.

Problem is 150 summer becomes 120 winter. For folks in the burbs working in cities that's a 100% no - talk about anxiety.

Also, they were building TWO battery plants in KY and one in Michigan. They are delaying one plant in KY, and reducing the Michigan one. So they're still building two battery plants.

🤔. I thought it was one near E-town and the other is a combined assembly and battery plant in TN. Where was the second KY plant to be built?

Two battery plants in KY, one in Tennessee at BlueOval City, and in Michigan.

They are delaying one in KY and downsizing the initial investment in Michigan.

Again depends on individual use, so buy what works for your use and the price you can afford.

The average commute in the US is 28 miles, so yeah 150 summer, 120 winter is more than enough for the majority of people. So 100 winter is more than enough without having to charge and twice enough if you can charge at work. Shockingly my suggestion even included possible battery degradation 🤯
