I typically have this problem where I may have 280 miles range indicated, It's cold, in mountains, and I'm driving at high speed. So, even though in theory I should have no problem making it to my 220 mile destination, and know the route, I select home and allow the Nav to calculate a route. Suddenly the 280 miles range drops to 230 miles and Nav is telling me I need to stop for a charge, and the recommended charger is out of the way. So I have no other choice but to cancel the route, and suddenly 280 mile range has returned. So then as I approach a known fast charger, I select home and allow the Nav to calculate a route again and again manually calculate the range safety margin to home. Typically, the Nav does start to calculate more accurate range numbers. But it is so frustrating. If the Nav simply used the original 280 miles range everything would be fine.

As I remember, the nav takes conditions into account. If you have changes in elevation, or weather conditions at the time (not sure on the weather one honestly), so that's probably why you had a change on your range and also why it went away when you turned off the nav. It probably takes into account the speed limit of the roads you're going to be using as well
