That's the wrong analysis. Have you ever utilized a life insurance policy? :p
Risk management has two dimensions - likely hood of occurrence and cost of occurrence. History of my electrical system tells me that the likely hood is pretty low. Maximum cost would be a few hundred dollars of food spoilage. How is that wrong?

I’m in my 60s with no debt. I don’t have life insurance.

I agree that the back-up is not worth it for for the "typical" short duration outage and household. Fossil fueled back-up covers the next category, might be good for people with only electric vehicles (me with Lightning purchase) who could get stranded during a rare multi-day outage, as it is able to be stored on premise and is still likely to be available in most cases (underground NG distribution if not propane/gasoline).

Your equation mentions cost of occurrence and you only mention food spoilage as a cost. What would be the cost to you of a 2 week outage? 2 month outage? Longer? Just because something hasn't happened to you in your 60 years doesn't mean it can't or won't. Example: Impact of pandemic with let's say "mild" death rate in perspective of human history.

It's a similar equation to thinking on nuclear power. It can be safe, very safe, very very safe - no matter how safe the magnitude of impact of the bad event should be considered along with the likelihood of the event occurring.

To me, the impact of a very long electrical outage when almost all life-sustaining elements of a household (heat, transport, food preservation, communications) is at least a "concern" that the Lighting takes a big step toward addressing. Even a limited amount of on-site power generation combined with the Lightning storage would make a household much more resilient, with potential of stacking levels of benefits. This is why I only care about the back-up if/when combined with solar if not solar and some fossil generation.

The Lightning (if I ever get it) will provide backup capability by virtue of the onboard inverter that I don't have now. I'll be happy to have it. But the doomsday scenarios you describe are so unlikely that I'm willing to risk it.

They bumped it up so they can offer you 50% off and make it seem like a good deal.

I don't fault you for that calculus, just pointing out that past performance is no guarantee of future results. At my place in life, I will continue to take steps to "electrify everything" and then build up capabilities to ensure reasonable access to electricity. The onboard inverter alone only addresses those otherwise inconsequential outages, so not much of a step forward other than some comfort/pleasantries during those outages.

Sunrun price is so high that, can I ask Tesla to install a battery, and then we disconnect tesla battery and connect Lightning in? That way we can sell Tesla battery to recover some cost :)

I think there's something wrong with their system but I got the email about installing my charger ($1600 to install!) and then I selected I was interested in the HIS. My total jumped above 109k. I did set up an appointment to talk to them on Thursday ;)

And just as I’m reading your post I get the email from Ford: “power by the truckload! Coordinate with SunRun!” Um, hard pass!

This kind of quote is so outrageous that it could (and probably will) cause damage to Ford. I hope Sunrun gets a hefty slap from Ford for this stupidity.

Supply chain issues maybe?

You need to supply them with more money.

Yes, the home integration may only be valuable to a few people. I have a generator for emergencies and inverters for small scale issues. The truck will be able to power my home for days or weeks with cords.
