@Ford Motor Company needs to send out button covers to customers immediately. Make them clear with a flip-up style latch.

OR, send an OTA update that disables the buttons while driving. Make the button so it's only usable while in park or when the truck is shut off.

Last thing i need to happen while driving with the kids is this.
Thatā€˜s what I was thinkingā€¦ Even if they add a cover, thereā€™s no reason for that button to be enabled while the truck is in motion.

There are already a bunch of options that turn off when the truck is moving, so disabling that button should be super easy to do (unless the button is hard wired and bypasses the computers).

If someone is in there while in motion, the button releases to the secondary latch (ventilation) and throws an error on the IP.

https://www.federalregister.gov/doc...safety-standards-interior-trunk-release#p-193
But if the secondary latch fails to keep the frunk closed whatever is in there will be skidding across the pavement immediately after brake activation due to the driver not being able to see out. In the OPs situation the secondary latch failed. A pull handle fixes this.

This is kind of my thought. No matter how the system is designed to work with primary and secondary latches, ultimately the system allowed the truck to get in a precarious situation, and it would have been completely avoided if it was a latch and not a button.

I do want to say I still absolutely love the Lightning. Itā€™s an amazing truck and handled out 2k mile road-trip better than I could have expected. That said, I feel like I have a version of PTSD where, if I ever have the button exposed and junk in my frunk, Iā€™ll always have this nagging concern it will happen again.

Yikes... I keep tools in my frunk (beer is in an RTIC in the bed, like a normal pickup), so I will be fashioning a cover ASAP as well.

I can understand the need to throw the first stage and allow for ventilation in case somebody is stuck in there by mistake, but completely opening while driving Is just plain bad under all circumstances.
Okay, I'll be the one to bring it up. The frunk should never open when the frunk button is pushed.

After loading the stuff in the frunk, do we know he closed the frunk completely?

That it was still open is easier for me to believe than the secondary latch failing.

A nice thought, but youā€™ve ignored historyā€¦.this isnā€™t the first occurrenceā€¦..and it wonā€™t be the last. It is time to solve thisā€¦..IMHOā€¦ā€¦.

And how many Tesla runaway accelerations were claimed. All but one were proven to be user error.

And, actually I'm not claiming it did not happen to him. I'm saying it's easier for me to believe it was, for whatever reason, not properly latched in the first place.

My ICE hoods have never opened when the interior latch is pulled. Never, not even the Ford Pinto. ;)

True, and I too am a pragmatist, butā€¦ā€¦the analytical side of me is seeing this is not a series of user errorsā€¦also, I vaguely remember there was a discussion after @OutofSpecKyle experienced his event that @Ford Motor Company was looking into a solutionā€¦ā€¦

But then again, I could be wrongā€¦.

Itā€™s a fair question and one I canā€™t disprove. Reminds me of a post on one of the Lightning forums about sudden acceleration and the aftermarket rubber mat could plainly be seen on the accelerator when the OP posted a picture.

I can tell you that there have been times the hood hasnā€™t closed all the way in the past, but each time I was either outside and did the sequence again until it latched, or alternatively was inside (using frunk button in the cab) and the frunk ajar message was prominently displayed. Iā€™ve never tried to drive it with the frunk unlatched/open, but I have to believe the warning would be more severe than the no seatbelt chime that canā€™t be missed. Perhaps someone here can do a driveway test as mine is now at the dealership.

A detail I didnā€™t think to bring up previously was that I did have a message on my dash after it occurred about the emergency release having been activated (or something to that effect).

Again, itā€™s a reasonable question, but all I can do is say that Iā€™m certain it was closed and ready to drive.

Even if that were true, thereā€™s still no reason it should open when driving. This is a state of the art vehicle with sensors and computer monitoring everywhere.

If a door is slightly ajar, we get warnings. If a somebody unlatches their seatbelts, we get warnings. So if the frunk is not closed completely, we should get warnings, so thereā€™s no chance it will open when driving.

I'm glad to hear there was at least some sort of sensor tripped, but I firmly believe there is still no reason for an electronically triggered frunk to be allowed to be fully opened while in motion. Even if one intention for the button is for the unlikely event that a person is forced into the frunk by a kidnapper, opening that frunk while driving will only make their situation even worse.

We've all seen movies where somebody was locked into a trunk. In every one of those scenarios the trunk is in the rear and they use all sorts of methods to escape and most of the time they wait until the car slows down and jump out the back. There are no scenarios where jumping out of the front while moving is a viable option.

A while back someone posted about a similar incident, but only the primary latch released and the Frunk lid held until he was able to pull over and secure it. Discussion on that thread led to me believe that this would eventually happedā€¦Iā€™m sorry it happened to you.

That occurrence led me to search for solutions to protect the internal Frunk release because I felt this was a true safety issue, knew this was going to happen to me some day, and that @Ford Motor Company might take a while to develop a solution.

I couldnā€™t find anything reasonable until another member of this forum developed a solution so simple it hurtā€¦.two self-adhesive mini-magnets, a clear plastic magnetic rocker light switch protector and 5 minutes with a Dremel Tool sandingā€¦.. It probably needs something more substantial, but should work until Fordsā€™s comes out with something saferā€¦ā€¦.

Awesome idea and I just placed an order for the cover and the magnets.

I'm sticking with the idea of the rare earth magnets because it would be stronger but you can potentially also just use an adhesive square metal plate designed to hold a cell phone in a magnetic holder because the cover already has magnets that were designed to be attracted to the screws on a light switch.
