I’ll definitely be doing that. Heading to bed now, but as luck would have it things got worse with the opening and closing tonight…definitely needs some work (have it on video and can try to post it tomorrow - upload didn’t work for me).
Just don't volunteer the event to your dealer.

Just go in there with a frunk problem and let them sort it.

No need to have it deemed "non warranty repairable"....

Complaints regarding safety issues such as this need to be filed with NHTSA on the NHTSA website. This is the same area that you can look up vehicle recalls and complaints from others.

I’ve been thinking about this. Given this theoretically shouldn’t be able to happen from what I’ve read on other threads, I don’t see how this could be anything but a warranty claim. If they say otherwise then it’s essentially acknowledging this the frunk should be able to open itself at a high rate of speed without a human pushing the button.

But to your point, now that I know it’s a pronounced issue I’m definitely not opening it again.

This is addressed in the highlighted paragraph of the federal standard:

https://www.federalregister.gov/d/01-20831/p-193

There's a possibility in this case that the action had been initiated while the truck was stopped waiting for traffic and/or moving under 3km/hr
I certainly can’t rule this out unequivocally. What I do know is the frunk was fully closed when I left and that there wasn’t a warning when I started driving.

While watching the traffic and pulling out I was watching the street and not looking at my dashboard, and jostling could have happened then.

EDIT - thinking about this more, had my case of Ultras been a small child, if they triggered the release at slow speed immediately before taking off they may have suffered the same outcome of being ejected upon the emergency slow down… and then potentially run over.

That might work….I went with the clear plastic solution to honor the safety regulation that requires the switch to be visible 👓. ….beside the fact I thought the member who designed it was pretty creative…….
sounds interesting - a cross-post in this thread if someone has it handy?

An OTA update can probably program it to open only if the vehicle is stopped and to give a dash warning if the vehicle is in motion. That’s my thoughts. Sorry this happened to you.

Looking
who's gonna jump out of their frunk going 50 MPH or higher... they wont survive.

easiest solution is with software update... disable above 20 mph or whatever the truck hardware can withstand without damage... or go with the latch.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Its just a matter of time before it happens to someone else. smh

The issue here is the accelerationis so fast that if something/someone triggers it at low speed you could easily be at 30 mph or more before it’s unlatched and lifting. The driver then naturally rapidly brakes/decelerates since they see nothing and you have a projectile launching out of the frunk. In my situation it was a case of Ultras that were mostly harmless to the cars behind me…but who knows what it will be next time.

See #16. It is not allowed to open past the primary latch at speeds of 1.86m/h (3k/h) or more.

Of course whether you'd survive or not wouldn't be top of mind if you were kidnapped and thinking you might die.

Think of those Ultras breaking open and destroying paint jobs - or the horror on a child's face that haunts them forever. :p #DrinkCraftBeer

100+ degrees and many hours on the river after the draft…my middle aged body can’t take that much craft beer, but I do love my IPAs. The bonus is the Ultras double as water/hydration.

At least with the Ultra's you don't have to worry about other cars stopping to pick them up off the highway and causing a more serious traffic problem.
