60 Amp install for FCSP at $1,500, or 80 amp at $2,200. Is it worth the extra $ ?

I'm having a similar debate, except I already have a 60Amp line installed with a Tesla Wall Connector.

My Lightning came with a FCSP, so I'm trying to decide if I just want to swap out the Tesla Wall Connect for the FSCP and settle on 48Amps of output from the existing 60Amp line. OR if I want to upgrade the circuit and wire to support 100Amps.

My installer is coming next week to at least do the EVSE upgrade on the existing line, but they will also be quoting the upgraded installation since that requires a permit in my location. Similar to the installer discussed in this thread, they're already telling me how the 100Amp line is completely unnecessary and not worth the money....

At this point I don't know if my 200Amp panel could support a 100Amp breaker or if the 1" FMC conduit installed with the ~50 foot 60Amp line could support the required wire size....but it feels like I spent so much already on this truck, why wouldn't I want to get the full power capability?

So...are y'all finding 80Amps over 48Amps of output worth it?

@Pjlightning what did you decide?
Iā€™d start with 48A and see how it works for you. Unless you drive a ton of miles every day, itā€™s likely fine. Thatā€™s my plan if my FCSP ever arrives.

2 - #3s with a #6 ground is legal in 1ā€ FMC, but if it has many bends, it could be a tough pull.

I saved the $ and went for the 60 setup
( FCSP dialed down to 48amp charge).

it totally fits my needs, with overnight charging giving me plenty of juice to top off the truck.

the only times I can think of that it would have made a difference is when I forget to set the charge limit to 100% before a long trip, and then when I realize it as Iā€™m packing the truck, itā€™s too late to crank the charge up to 100% in the time I have before hitting the road.
But thatā€™s a minor inconvenience, and totally avoidable if I just remembered to adjust the one-time max charge setting. Yes, in these instances, goosing the rate up to 80 from the 48 would be handy, but not a big deal.

On a side noteā€¦..
Electric rates literally doubled as of Jan 1st in Connecticut (love ya EversourcešŸ˜”)ā€¦.
So now I try NOT to charge at home to save money, because itā€™s waaaay cheaper to go to Electrify America in Mass which charges by the minute, so a 20-80 fill-up only costs about $10 !!!
(Weā€™ll see how long that lasts).

of course my ICE Truck friends love ribbing me about it as their gas prices at the pump have dropped in half in the past six months or so!

What a time to go Electric šŸ§ (kidding- still love the truck).

And then in Musk-land-
Tesla drops the Model Y by 20% this week , as Ford cranks up their Lightning price in the other direction.
Time to swap ?
(Sorta , mostly kiddingā€¦I think šŸ˜‰)

Ahh, thatā€™s no good. I literally just got rid of my Tesla to come back to Fordā€¦crazy times indeed.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. Thatā€™s basically his ā€œI donā€™t want to do this job but if you pay me, I willā€
It probably is more difficult because of pulling that thicker wire, even just bending it in the box. Worth $170 not sure but harder for sure

While I was trying to sort out my 80 amp coming thru mail the past few weeks I went online and bought the ford 48 amp charger for my house.
I had my electrician run 2 seperete 60 amps with the ford 48 amp directly wired in and the other 60 amp with a 4 prong plug in for future use if my wife gets an electric car.
The SamE electrician went to my shop and installed a 100 amp that will house the 80 amp.

My 80 amp is supposedly finally being shipped while my 48 amp came in 3 days after I ordered it on ford website. Iā€™m getting what looks like so far about 30 miles of charge per hour on the 48 amp which is plenty for me so I donā€™t think I need the 80 amp at the houseā€¦ā€¦but I paid for the 80 amp with the ER battery so Iā€™ll install it at the shop and see if Iā€™m blown away by it.

If anyone is curious Iā€™m getting 17 mph charge on my portable charger thatā€™s plugged into a 4 prong 100 amp breaker at my shop.

if your panel doesnā€™t allow for a 100 amp you will probably be perfectly happy with a 60 amp using the 48 amp setting on the charge pro station.

I was also so blown away with the lightning being my first EV in general that I /my wife knew within the next few years we would have more then 1 EV so thatā€™s why I went ahead and installed a second 60 amp for future use so I didnā€™t have to mess with it again.
