OTA recently causing EVSE to go into Error mode

Hi team,
Through December and January, my 2023 Lariat ER has been trying to install 6.8.0 and several other updates. In December, it attempted 6.8.0 quite a few times unsuccessfully. This correlated to charging errors both on the truck and my EVSE (Grizzl-E Duo set to 40 amps on a 50 amp circuit). At first, I thought it was a coincidence. After my EVSE errored out 7-8 times with an "Over Current" error in just over a week, I pinged Grizzl-E to investigate. In Grizzl-E fashion, they responded quickly and we tracked it for a few days. They replaced the EVSE. All seemed well for a few weeks. Ford had delayed the distribution of 6.8.0 so it was no longer trying to do the update.

Now in January, my truck was attempting to install 6.8.0 again - and again, the replacement EVSE was erroring out with the same error. After 6 tries and multiple charge errors, 6.8.0 finally went through and all seemed well for a couple of days.
Last night OTA 23-PU0813-DOR-UP2 - this is supposedly an update for the door modules although it was a 42-minute update which seems pretty excessive for a door module update. Again, my EVSE went into "Over Current" during the update.

This has happened way too many times for me to believe it is a coincidence and I'm wondering if others have seen similar behaviors during updates in the last couple of months.

I would look into the house wiring and connections. If you're using the evse with a plug then have a real good look at that too. If the problem is in the truck then it's a strange one.

I have ChargePoint home flex for Mach e and grizzle for the lightning. Never had issue with ChargePoint home flex but the grizzle would stop working for no apparent reason from time to time. I would need to plug and unplug many times for it to work. My work around is just use the ChargePoint which work flawlessly for over two years whereas the grizzle had issue within the first year. If I live near their office I would just drop the grizzle off on their parking lot for them to take back their garbage since their tech support is just as useless.

The wiring/breaker is only 1 year old and it all looks good. I won't rule out wiring and will keep an eye on it since I know this can cause all kinds of grief, however the errors directly align with the OTA attempts. The system has been working perfectly for a year until 6.8.0 made numerous attempts. An "Over Current" suggests the truck is trying to draw more power than the EVSE says it can have. With the truck's dual chargers, it can certainly try to draw up to 80 amps. The EVSE is shutting it down which is somewhat comforting that it recognizes the situation before blowing the breaker.
I'm hoping it is just an anomaly with the last set of updates, but if it is an EVSE

Good to know. If it is a Grizzl-E issue, I'll push back on them. Not sure how to prove it though. The Duo is the only EVSE that I've found that allows the charging of two EVs at the same time on a 50A circuit which is all my electric system can handle. I really like that feature. Until recently it has kept my Lightning and wife's MME topped up every night.

Good idea however, this requires two EVSEs on two separate circuits which my electrical system won't support. I'm maxed out with one 50-amp circuit. Perhaps in my next house ;-)
It does require two EVSE units, true. But it does NOT require two breakers. They can power share off one breaker, you tell them what the max current is and they will adjust so that the combined draw is never above what you tell them. Here's a write up from a MachE owner who installed two from a single 14-50 run.

It does require two EVSE units, true. But it does NOT require two breakers. They can power share off one breaker, you tell them what the max current is and they will adjust so that the combined draw is never above what you tell them. Here's a write up from a MachE owner who installed two from a single 14-50 run.

Yeah, even though wallbox's are on the lower end ( I think around $400 a pop ) that's still a lot.

I haven't received any of the 6.x updates yet so I'm afraid I can't help determine where the root of the problem is. I haven't seen any other threads (that I can recall) related to it, likely because only a small portion of owners have actually had it pushed.

I stand corrected...I hope you are able to figure out what's going on so you don't need to replace your current setup. Nice to know there's an alternative but I wouldn't go that route unless it was my only option.

Two EVSEs sharing a single branch circuit won’t meet current code anywhere in the US unless your jurisdiction has amended the NEC. That will be allowed in the 2026 NEC and some inspectors may let it slide knowing it’s coming.
