24' Pro (with heat pump) vs 23' Pro with Tow Tech, Pro Power, Max Tow

Hey all!

Hope I can have your help in considering my options.

I have a 24' Pro on order that is built but held up like all the others. This has no added options.

I see a 23' Pro available with nearly a $5K dealer discount and includes the Tow Tech Package, Pro Power Onboard, and Max Tow Package. I don't need any of these features. I don't tow, I don't need a lot of power at any remote areas, and our area has extremely reliable power.

Here's the pickle...
- The 24' has a heat pump and will give an unknown increase in cold weather range. Our area has a cold winter so range is a concern of mine.

- The 23' does not but is cheaper and with some additional packages (that I don't need). This one includes almost a $5K dealer discount.

So I guess the question boils down to how effective the heat pump will be but Ford hasn't put out any numbers and it seems there aren't any delivered 24's to get a gauge from.

What is your average daily mileage in cold weather?

Also the Tow Tech includes a very useful 360 Camera, forward sensing system and heated side mirrors.

Depends where in the PNW you live, I rarely use the electric heat, the seats are enough, The 360 camera would be really nice, I may rig up something. I have the max tow and that is insurance on cooling the battery.
Think strongly about the 360 camera, unless your in the Eastern half of the PNW

Thanks for the input. The only thing from those features that would be nice to have is those 360* cams! Yep, I'm on the cold winter side of the mountains over in Tri-Cities. At the coldest points in winter it will get down towards and below zero. I don't have long to drive at any particular time of the year and we have the wife's gas car for longer distances.

Typically daily driving is under 50 miles. Didn't know about the addition of the forward sensors and heated mirrors. What do the forward sensors do? Help with pulling up to objects? Emergency braking?

I've spent alot of time in the Tri-Cities area and am familiar with your winters. If you travel less than 120 highway miles a day, you will be fine with any SR model (2023/2024). Get what makes the most sense from a features and cost standpoint.

Heated side mirrors can defrost your side mirrors when remote starting or preconditioning your truck depending on what settings you set in addition to being able to defrost via button next to heated seats. The forward sensing system is like your rear backup parking sensors, but for the front. Gives you beeps and distance indicator on your camera view.

I really appreciate your replies! The '23 is over in Seattle but is the same parent dealership as my local dealer. I'll find out if they can transfer it over to them.

Yes you will use the heat. Even here, I leave it plugged in when I am home, I set a departure, and the cabin is nice and warm before I unplug and leave the garage. Of course I am an old guy who likes to be warm. I agree with the 120 miles in winter, and you will have 160 summer miles while keeping the 80-20 % battery range.

Also, since you are only using an average of 50 miles a day. The benefit of the heat pump would be efficiency (both in energy savings and climate control), but we're talking dollars per year (possibly even cents depending on your energy rates), not hundreds of dollars.

Myself, personally, I'd take the current deals on the 2023s before I got a 2024. (Unless you want the Flash model, or like the passenger faux charge port delete)

Either way, you'll love your truck. Don't forget to put it in Sport and floor it on your way home (up to the speed limit of course).

There haven't been a ton of deals on the lower end of the models, like Pro and SR XLT, that I've seen. As amazing as the deals are for the XLT ER's I just can't go that high so the Pro is where I'm at. Since I haven't seen deals on the Pro's, until now, I was set on waiting for my ordered 2024.

I test drove a Pro last winter and WOW! The most amazing driving experience I've ever had. Too bad it was marked up $20K at the time.

I almost bought a bare pro, and ended up with one that has tow tech. The 360 camera is a game changer. I use it constantly.
As for the heater, I can't tell if a heat pump would make a difference. When it's below freezing the range is clobbered no matter what. I just drive with the heater blasting.

I agree completely. I drove for over 40 years without 360 cameras, but once I started using the 360 cameras, I can't imagine driving without them.

It truly is game changing, especially getting into parking lot spaces.

I also agree that although the heat pump should improve range, it may not be enough of a boost to sway your choice. If you have a home charger, the best way to improve range in the winter is to keep it plugged in, and whenever possible, pre-condition it before you leave, so it uses your home power to warm up the batteries.

$5000 / $.075 = 66,667 kWh

66,667 kWh / 131 kW = 508.9

You would have to fully charge your truck, from 0% to 100%, 509 times before you start saving money with the truck that has the heat pump. And that doesn't include all the other goodies it has.

I know what I would do.

I don't think a heat pump is about saving money but having better range in the freezing cold. Until someone compares a 2023 to a 2024 Lightning on a 0F day we won't know what the resistance heater range penalty is.
