Experiment: Tell a person they could either pay for gas at $3.00 per gallon which works out to say $1500 a year (hypothetical example) OR they could pay $2.00 per gallon(which works out to be a fuel cost of $1000/yr) with eliminated gas tax but at the end of the year pay $500 in extra taxes for road repairs. I'll bet by a very wide margin people would vote for the higher gas price with a retort like "I don't want to pay the government any more taxes".

Americans are by in large ignorant of how taxes are supposed to work. Its all a psychological thing and has been that way since Reagan....
Yes, and the experiment would hold true even if the "end of year road taxes" were LESS than the cumulative gas taxes. Most Americans would willingly pay more for an invisible tax than for an explicit one.

A generalization, but Americans have a short attention span and focus on the shiny object vs the long game... often to their detriment.

So the EV tax credit took a step backwards last night. Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer put in an amendment that keeps the credit at $7500 and limits it to 200000 cars per automaker. However, the amendment also limits the EV Tax credit to people making less than $100K and it can only apply to vehicles that cost $40K or less.

This was a non-binding amendment but it passed and the $3.5trillion package went through the Senate using reconciliation. The amendment is not expected survive in the House or Representatives.

This is just a gimmick. What she really want to do is to slow EV sales.

Non-binding means that it's not a law, and shouldn't even be called an amendment. The reconciliation had not gone through the Senate. All they voted for is to start working on it. There are still many hoops to jump through.

The $40,000 limit makes 3 or 4 vehicles applicable. Ioniq, mini, and base model leaf I think is all.

Single motor Cybertruck and Lightening Pro and there would be a lot more coming out of wood works if it passes.

If it includes destination fee then no
The manufacturers and dealers will make sure the math works correctly for the marginal stuff if it means thousands of dollars price difference to consumer.

A. No way in hell the cybertruck will be $39k. Its the typical Bait and switch Elon does with every Tesla. At launch the entry level trim will magically disappear OR it will raise in price substantially. Its a gimmick.

B. This vote is meaningless. Its part of vote-o-rama where basically everyone tries to throw out wild amendments that they know are going to go nowhere. It gets everyone "on the record", the minority party can get their hits (to win votes for the next election) before they are overruled by the majority. Biden has made it clear he wants more EV tax credits, not less. I don't see any way that some type of expanded funding for EVs isn't included in the final bill.

I'm going to assume it'll go with MSRP and not actual sale price, but ya, they'll drop $1000 or whatever needed.

Agreed on both points.

But... Elon Musk IS you're only hope for Solar and Wind "energy storage" (just ask the blokes in Hornsdale, South Australia) so why the hate?

MATE!
?
Uhh...no he's not. The Tesla cult would like you to believe everything revolves around Elon and it really doesn't.

Personally, I find Elon to be obnoxious and full of himself.

The $35k Model 3 was available for 20 months. Not at launch, but it was available for quite a while.

I think there's been too many unforeseeable material cost increases to hold that price on the Cybertruck, but maybe they'll make a stripped version at low margin at that price. Ford clearly slashed its typical F-150 margins on the Pro SR, also, to hit that price.
