I just received a new A2Z NASC to J1772 adaptor. My Lighting faults out after 2 minutes due to overheating. I'm using this on my Tesla Wall Connector hardwired to a 60 amp circuit.

One of the 2 top pins at the NACS side of the NACS to J1772 gets REALLY REALLY HOT. The charge output slows quickly and after 2 minutes the charger STOPS. Lightning APP sends a Charge Station Fault error. It happened 4 times in a row. Using my older $54 Amazon adaptor it works fine. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BZ4F3GM5/ The only reason I ordered the A2Z was the latch on the Amazon adaptor is sticking. My old inexpensive Yeekue adaptor has added 8kWhs in 49 min and still is going strong. Tesla app is showing a constant 11.7 kW output

I called A2Z and he said first time he heard of overheating but he is sending me an replacement tomorrow. He will check to see possibly that they have a bad batch.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Wow, that’s first I’ve heard of that. I have one, but have to use it. 🤔

I strongly suggest you download “Wall Monitor for Tesla” App from the iOS App Store (don’t think there’s an Android version). If you have a Tesla Gen3 Wall Connector, this is a must-have: it will reveal the internal state of the charger, including graphs of voltages and currents, in and out, and most importantly, handle temperature and circuit board temperature (including graphs over time). Might help you to decipher what’s happening.

WOW!. Didn't know that this app existed. What a great tool THANKS! I paid for the Premium upgrade. Real cheap for what it does.

The App couldn't find the Wall connector on the network using the search feature. I manually entered the IP address for the Connector and it immediately displayed info.

Exactly the tool I need. Tomorrow I will charge the Lightning with both adaptors and report the temps. I can tell you that one pin at the handle BURNT my finger when the other was only warm to touch. Obviously a high resistance contact at the pin on the handle.

Here is what t showed tonight when Wall Connector was idle.

“Live Charts” is also a really useful feature. Only limitation of this app is that your iOS device has to be connected to the same router/network as your Wall Connector (it can’t access your Wall Connector remotely over the web, only locally). Perhaps some network settings magic (port forwarding? static i.p. for Wall Connector?) might accomplish remote connection, but that’s beyond me.

I have one of those adapters but have not had a chance to test it out. Watching to see if the replacement works as expected.

Ageed. It was nice to call and talk directly to a human. When I explained that it overheated yet my inexpensive 2 year old Amazon adaptor still worked they verified my order and said they would ship a replacement immediately. What was strange was they didn’t want the defective one back. It would seem that they would want it to verify it was defective and analyze what was wrong to prevent future issue.

The only time I ever had issue with the inexpensive Amazon adaptor was in direct Florida summer Sunlight. it occasionally reduced charge rate form 11.7 kw to 9,6 kw when handle was heated by sunlight. Shading the handle resolved that issue.

UPDATE. I did some testing this morning with the A2Z and 2 other off brand inexpensive adaptors I purchased October 2023 from Amazon for $59.99 and $54.99. One was rated at 40 Amps and the other was rated at 80 Amps.

I set Charge Limit about 5% above what the battery Current (SOC) State of Charge is.

A2Z:
I initially provides full 11.7 kWs, and after about 3-5 minutes it shuts down the charger well below the charge limit set. The displayed Temps on Wall Monitor for Tesla APP does NOT show excessive heat at the connector (117dF). BUT one of the 2 pins is VERY VERY hot to touch. I suspect the A2Z temp sensor is shutting down the charge because the internal temp sensor limit is triggered.

#1 Off Brand 48 amp rated Adaptor
It charges fine. Steady 11.7 lWs output
Wall Monitor APP peaks at 125.5 dF after 10 minutes in direct sunlight when charging
Both pins are only warm to touch.

#2 Off Brand adaptor rated at 80 AMPS. This adaptor looks very similar to the A2Z.
It charges fine. Steady 11.7 lWs output for over 10 minutes
Wall Monitor APP peaks at 132.6 dF after 10 minutes in direct sunlight when charging
Both pins on the adattor are only warm to touch after 10 minutes

Conclusion:
A2Z has a defective female pin. High resistance causing internal temp sensor to shut down the charger due to pin overheat.

I've had the A2Z Stellar adapter for over a year, used it probably half dozen times on an 80A tesla destination charger. I've had no issues at all, worked great. Definitely sounds like you got a defective one unfortunately.
