Moving this weekend and looking for a little advice on my charging route. I do have the Tesla adapter from Ford. This will be my first long trip with the Lightning. I have a Platinum and leaving Wantagh NY 11793 and going to Pioneer TN 37847. Not trailering anything, and truck will not be weighted down at all. Any suggestions would help.

Use ABRP (A Better Route Planner). Make sure to have it set to use Tesla also. Easy peasy.

5 charging stops, arriving at 11:42PM if you left at 8AM. All Tesla. Sign up for the membership the morning off, then downgrade, takes effect 30 days later.

I've never had to do a long trip but I'm curious if you or others strictly follow ABRP's target charge. For example, at the 1st stop in Baltimore it says you will arrive at 19% but only charge to 45%. I would tend to just go ahead and go to 75 or 80% while I'm there. Especially since the next stop has me rolling in at 10%. Would rather roll in at 40% in case efficiency is wrong, etc. Maybe it's the EA in me that I don't trust the station will be available or not completely packed.

Do this at all the stops and you roll in with more than 20% at the last stop. Exception would be if you have free / low cost charging at destination - then you charge to the target level at the last stop.

In other words, always charge to 80% until last charge session. I don't think this adds any time and you have a buffer for the first part of the trip that gets used up at the last stop.

I do not follow it. A couple of things.

First, if you look in the settings, you can set a slider for stopping - few but long, quickest arrival, short but many, and 2 in between. I have my set on Quickest Arrival.

They know that if you charge less it goes faster. Yes, but... Prior to Tesla, the next location (EA) might be crappy today. Or have a line. Or, I'm getting better efficiency than ABRP said (I set it to be CONSERVATIVE). So, I would also charge to 80%. But, note that if you do, it's unlikely you will eliminate any stops...

So yes, charging to 80% instead of 45% adds time, because charging slows as you get higher SOC. That's a reality.

I also find that ABRP doesn't care if I spend more money, so I look at the cost of each stop. If Nebraska is 44 cents per minute, and the next state is 64 cents per kilowatt, I am going to charge in Nebraska to 90% and save a ton of money. Likewise, if am charging one more time in an expensive state and going to a much cheaper state, I will charge the minimum.

As to the last stop, I charge enough to get to my destination safely, depending on the charging there. I pick hotels with a fast charger nearby as a backup, and generally roll in with 20% or less. At home, I target 10%.

Yes. Make sure on "types of chargers" that you have NACS selected. Now that you have your adaptor, you have no reason to visit an EA station ever again.

I understand that owners have used ABRP and other route planning tools but in the last 15 months, I've taken three 2k+ mile trips using PlugShare (free and you can define filters) as my initial route planner, then entering my destination in the Ford navigation and comparing the two. While Ford has a way to go with their UI/UX, the actual functionality has not failed me.

Did you look at post #2? That is your route exclusively with Tesla Superchargers....

That won't work in this case. The Ford navigation doesn't recognize the Tesla chargers yet. Unless you entered the address of the charger. But it won't recognize it as a place to charge, and might route you differently thinking you hanlve to charge somewhere else.

And it also looks like the trip planning feature for Plugshare can't distinguish NACS and Magic Dock sites from other Superchargers.
