This is what I have. Per the labels it was manufactured in April 2021 but I purchased it in October of 2022. I most recently used it in November 2024.

The instructions indicate that it is a passive tag (rather than a transponder in a technical sense), such that there is no battery and no consumer-servicible components inside. When I reconcile toll entries with the TollsNY app, the tag appears to be working as expected even if it is just placed onto the dash tray behind thee 15" screen.

Is this what we're all talking about or is there a unit with active electronics?
I am no expert by any stretch however, my understanding of the way it works is that it is an RFID unit so when it gets hit with the right frequency, it basically activates to be able to read or something along those lines.

Is there a benefit to purchase it? I get them for free with auto replenish.
I understood that by purchasing the tag, there would be some discounts or preferential pricing when using the toll network. I don't know by how much if at all, but I figured it would also be fun to have one.

Yes that makes sense. I think it was a good decision of them to use passive electronics like this to make it as seamless as possible for the customer.

They also indicate needing up to 24-hours between registration and first use, which corresponds to their back-end workflows along with credit card set-up, NY Tolls Account, license plate details, etc...

I did all of these things as soon as I purchased the tag while on a trip. Took me about 10-minutes to set everything up on my end and it seemed to register within minutes once I hit my first toll gate.

so i got off the phone, they said they sending me a new tag. But it doesnt make sense if it works outside the car but not inside. So i told him it doesnt make sense. He said in order for me to get a exterior tag we have to try the new one first. If that dont work, they will send tag license plate one and return new tag
Strange. I just re-read your original post and for me, I do have window tint even on my front windshield (XPEL Prime XR Ceramic @50% VLT if I remember correctly) and I haven't had any trouble in using the Toll tag.

The bag that the tag comes in is an RFID shield, so I don't know if that has had an impact by jamming the read signal when you're passing a gate. It's a long shot but that's all I could think of initially.
