I see what you’re saying. If Ford only sold 1 car, the loss would be $4.5 billion per car. But it still wouldn’t be wrong.

I see what you’re saying. If Ford only sold 1 car, the loss would be $4.5 billion per car. But it still wouldn’t be wrong.
And in that hypothetical, if the headline said that Ford lost $4.5B per car, it would also be lazy and misleading. No doubt that Ford has already sent a buttload of money specifically on the next gen of EV truck. That doesn't mean that a single penny of it should be counted toward the cost of Lightning.

Yeah, I do see your point. Being married to a CFO, and having worked with accounting systems for years, I understand that the headline doesn’t mean that $30K in parts over and above the selling price are going out the door. Some people won’t, especially if they’re looking to bash EVs.

Headlines are designed to induce clicks, nothing more.
