Preconditioning for very short trips

I've also shifted my winter charging strategy, it starts at 7am, our goal is we leave for errands, coffee & breakfast run at 8am or as soon as the truck reaches back to 90%, this morning the process started at 79% and with remote start later 7:45 in the process, charging was done at 8:10 and we left at 8:17.

UPDATE:
I added screen grab's of the charging data from this morning, I had to wait for Fordpass to post to the cloud later in the afternoon, the remote start ran 7:45 and extended to 8:15, 8:17 I unplugged. I'll assume that 3 KWH was to warm the truck, 16 KWH to charge battery (10% overhead 14.4/.9=16), the balance of 2.9 KWH for pre-charge warming of the battery it was 22 degrees this morning.

21.8 KWH over 77 minutes---------------21.6 KWH ----------------------11% = 14.4 KWH net stored

I see you are charging to Fords recommended 90%. Is that daily or did you actually need that much for that day? I have noticed a huge efficiency gain in charging AFTER driving the truck FWIW.

I see you are charging to Fords recommended 90%. Is that daily or did you actually need that much for that day? I have noticed a huge efficiency gain in charging AFTER driving the truck FWIW.
Back then I was going to 90% regularly, but now go to 85%, I don't need that much energy for my daily routines, but I also want the ability to go on a moments notice for emergency road trips that may include trailering, motorcycle down rescues, family members in ill health that live a distance away, etc.

Depending on your ambient temps charging a couple hours after a long drive event is likely the best strategy, Ford does recommend letting the battery cool a little after an extended drive, start charging while the temps are in the optimum range, no disputing that strategy [ Location San Luis Obispo]

BUT

Living in New England, with morning temps in the 20's & 30's and only making reasonably short day trips, my best method of operation is to start charging at 5am or 6am to reach my goal SOC within an hour or so of morning departure, leveraging the warmth of charging to modestly condition the battery. This strategy eliminates to reduced power output to motors if I drove it dead cold.

This allows me to avoid the extra energy spent on formal departure timed conditioning.

Yup I have shifted my charging to start around 7 am. We don’t get crazy cold here most 40-50’s in the winter but figure it’s still worth it.

Plugged in preconditioning is to help prepare the vehicle for long road trips, to maximize the available SOC / charge to for the initial leg.

Charge to the 80, 90, 100 % depending on the situation.

Thanks for this thread. I looked at my charges logs closer to realize the power I was wasting to precondition for a daycare drop-off in the morning. The later charge times are a great idea!
