Problems with charging to 100%?

The other day I stopped at a DCFC (350kW) charger with about a 20% state of charge. As I started charging I set the truck to charge to 100%, and it barreled along to 80% at a pretty great rate before crawling through to 90%. At 90% it jumped to 100% and told me it was fully charged.

I didn't try to troubleshoot anything but noticed over the next five minutes driving out to the highway, it settled back down at 90%.

Has anyone seen this before or have any insights? I have a service appointment Friday (anyway) but don't particularly want to add other things to the list because they're so great at taking their time.

Don't know why you would DCFC to 100%, but it should take a long time to go from 90 to 100%. So something is up.

The rare occasions I've had to charge to 100% either on DC or AC, it has taken a while. I'm certainly a little concerned but it hasn't ever done that before.

THe DCFC I use will only ever charge the truck to 90%, period!

I’m curious to hear the answers but I bet it’s something along the line of the high rate of charge makes it difficult for the BMS to find space for the electrons when the battery is close to fully charged. At a trickle rate not an issue but with that firehose DCFC it reminds me of the I love Lucy show where she and Ethel are on the chocolates assembly line and the belt starts going too fast.

Charging to 100% is not as bad as many feel it is. With 6.5 years of driving a FFE that can only charge to 100% unless you stop it yourself, I can say the battery is not showing very little loss of capacity.

I'm not saying that setting a limit to something lower has no effect. I believe it does, just not as significant as some believe. That said, don't charge to 100% if you won't be driving for a few days. My understanding is that sitting at 100% is harder on a Li-ion battery than charging to 100%, especially in hot weather.

DC fast charging will slow down above 80 and more so above 90. So much so that it can take longer to go from 90 to 100 as it does to go from 10 to 90. Where I am, we only recently started getting charged by the kWh, so being charged by the minute made the slow-down obscenely expensive. Even without the price incentive, the extra cost in your time can be a heavy price. If you're doing something else while charging, it's not a cost to you, but you're monopolizing the fast charger to slowly charge your vehicle.

As others have said, the bigger issue for the OP is the sudden jump in the display from 90 to 100.

The truck has a hard stop at 90% when DCFC. If you don't override it, you can't go past 90%.

My ford lightening doesn't alow me me to go over 90 percent, is that normal the most I get is 220 miles for the 90 %.

My ford lightening doesn't alow me me to go over 90 percent, is that normal the most I get is 220 miles for the 90 %.
You can set a one-time charge limit of 100% prior to initiating a DCFC session to enabling charging to 100%.

While I do believe you're right, (who am I to argue with Yoda) can you share any data ?
If not I'll take one for team and try it, just to get the data.
Even on L2 it throttles the charging down to ~5kW so sitting around on a DCFC at that rate would be rather foolish unless you really, really, need the range.

Personal experience. I use a chargepoint station nearby(it's 1/2 the cost if charging at home) and it will only charge to 90% even when the One Time charge setting is 100%. Having said the above, I have only used a handful of other DCFC's and never tried to charge to 100 on them so I can't say definitively if its only that station. I can charge to 100 on my level 2 chargers

Can't share the data without your company joining the consortium (have to pay for all four years of tier 1 data ($150k per year)at this point so we are looking at $600k), but if I recall, we did set a 1 time to 100% and it still stop at 90%, then we set the 1 time again and restarted the process to get to 100%.
