I've carried 40-50 gallon water heaters on the tailgate. Fits perfectly between the factory cable.supports. plus the heater weighs less than 150#.

Thanks for the psa. On a slightly related note, the sensor that is supposed to reverse the gate upon obstruction detection is not so great. I had a rock stuck to the gate by mud and the gate closed, the rock stuck and crushed the reverse light lens. Ugh...

Bottom line, make sure there are no obstructions! (Also, stupid design with those hidden lights!)

BTW, those things you attached your straps to are actually bottle openers.
That is what I thought they were as well. Donā€™t see me ever using them. Good to know there is a setting to disable auto close if needed.

Along those lines, I have had rubber stoppers turn 90Ā° as well as the steps not being fully seated prevent automatic closing. Gate would keep opening and the dashboard would tell me it was ajar.

As a truck noob, I appreciate this thread. The auto close would not have crossed my mind either. Some great tips here.

I bought a single sheet of foam board for a project today and I strapped it down using the tail gate straps. I was extremely lucky I did not cause thousands of dollars in damage. I noticed the tail gate flapped when I left the parking lot but did not think much of it other than it might break the foam board. I took the side streets instead. When I got home I realized just how close I came. The strap hooks protruded beyond the tie down enough to hit the tail light if the gate had decided to close. The gate also has a feature where if you lift it partially and let go it will close fully. I tested it in drive and it closed. Iā€™m both relived and livid that a slight oversight could have been so costly.

Wow, that could be very costly. Thank you for the heads up and sharing this with the group.
