Could you elaborate on your reasoning for suggesting the buyback route? This seems like a very long process. Do you think the truck might be doomed to have other problems?
If they can build and continue selling them as new, they can sure as h-e-double hockey-stick fix the ones people have already purchased.
And if they won’t , listen to what they’re telling people who already bought.

45+ days or so for a repurchase & why take a chance v staying with cascading problems.
Thanks for your reply. I understand where you’re coming from. I think if there are additional issues I’ll consider that route. Thanks!

Three weeks ago (April 11th) after 3,700 miles on my 2023 Lariat, the rear motor had a catastrophic failure.

I was decelerating from about 40mph and turning into my neighborhood when I felt something weird in the back of the truck. As I came out of the turn and began accelerating something didn’t feel right.

After exiting the truck, I noticed a trail of fluid up my driveway. I pulled the truck forward, and there was a puddle of red dielectric fluid (see attached photo). That trail of fluid leads all the way back to where I turned into the neighborhood.

The next day, I had Ford roadside assistance tow it to a nearby dealer. The dealer said the rear motor was ā€˜blownā€ and there was a decent sized hole in it. (I’ve asked for photos. If I get them, I’ll share them.)

What shocked me is that the service advisor said this was the fourth one he has seen! If one dealer has seen this four times, how often does this happen?

The original estimate was 10 days. It’s now been 21 and they don’t even have the part. I’m hoping this doesn’t take three months like the service advisor said the first one did.

Update 5/20/24
Received photos of the hole in the housing. The dealership was expecting to receive the necessary part(s) today. Hoping this doesn’t go beyond six weeks.

Final Update

Got the truck back yesterday (5/23). It ended up being six weeks to the day. The service advisor said Ford would take the failed motor and dissect it to see what happened. He also said they don’t ever report back. It’s good to finally have the truck. Hope this remains a very rare occurrence.
I have just ran into the same exact issue after only 1100 miles

It’s March 2025. Mine is a 2023 I bought in December of 23. Lariat extended range. The rear motor just had a catastrophic failure driving in my neighborhood. I was approaching a stop sign at like 10-5 mph and heard a clanking sound. I have the one pedal driving engaged in sport mode. Leaked a red fluid. I called a tow to take to the dealer and then climbed under the rear. Chunks of metal are on the skid pan. I can’t believe the motor exploded. 26k miles on the truck. I have towed a boat weighing around 8 k pounds. But that was summer of 24.

Sorry that happened to yours. I have a post on here when my 2023 XLT ER rear motor had that same failure at around 6700 miles. Took 3 weeks to get the truck back from the dealership with a new motor installed. I've put 10,000 miles on the new motor, and everything is going well.

Ford treated me well throughout the process, hopefully you have the same experience.

Hope your replacement EDM comes in quickly and you're on the road soon.

Now that it's in the shop, could you get some photos of the carnage?

How systemic is this problem? Reading this thread has me scared of this happening to my 23 Lariat built around the same time.

For those who have experienced this failure, when you come to a stop to get out of the vehicle do you always put on the safety brake or do you just let the truck roll back against the parking prowl? As a habit I always engage the electronic safety brake before getting out. Hate any vehicle rolling back against the prawl.

IIRC, I may have read about a motor failure twice in 3 years ..... so rare is my take.

I don't know exactly what part failed in mine to cause it, but I just let the truck decide if it needs the parking brake on or not. It does engage often for me, as my driveway has a slight incline to it.
