Hi all,
Right now I am running my charger off a split 30 amp dryer outlet. I want to do a dedicated outlet. I was looking around in my panel that is on the opposite side of my house in the basement. So yes this will be a long run. I had an electrician install a 50 amp breaker and run wire to my kitchen a few months back for a new stove. When he had the panel off I had a look in there and seen there is a 50 amp breaker not hooked to anything. So yesterday I took off the cover to have a good look and there is a 6awg al wire in the box unhooked. I traced it and it is in my attic unhooked. My question is can I take out that 50 amp and put a 40 amp in its place reconnect the wire in the panel. Then run that wire in the attic over to the garage to a knife switched disconnect that is good for al and cu then run copper to an outlet to plug my charger into? The al wire would be rated for 50 amps but I want to be safe and use 40 amp and charge at 32 amps 80 % rule. The Al run would be about 30ft over to the garage if that matters. Or should I shorten the Al wire to where it comes into the attic and then run the Cu the rest of the run? Only reason is the path this wire is run from the basement to the attic was installed when the house was built and I don't think I can run new Cu wire that route.
Thanks
