it clearly states there are no extended EV battery warranty past the factory 8 year / 100k miles.
Same for ICE. If the engine blows up after the warranty, it's on your dime. Always will be, that's why the price drops on all vehicles when it passes warranty coverage. By the time 8 years pass, I fully expect there will be cost effective battery replacement options from numerous suppliers.

I was forced into retirement a few years ago because of a severe hand disability, and Iā€™ve found a sense of happiness by being somewhere else. Anywhere else. I drove 40,000 miles last year, and Iā€™m not slowing down unless/until my hands force me to. This truck has taken me from Minnesota to both coasts and down to south Texas, and itā€™s been nearly flawless except for a module failure last January. It has 47,000 miles on it, and Iā€™d be over 100K in less than two years. I canā€™t pay it off that fast, and Iā€™d be one of the first to push past the 100K battery warranty.

Iā€™d keep it if they had a demonstrated history of holding up past the warranty period, but that wonā€™t exist for awhile. I expect itā€™ll be radiactive on the used market once the warranty expires, so I think Iā€™m best selling now and finding something I can confidently put 200K on.

This is my fourth EV and I hate to go back to gas, but Iā€™ve gotta get my priorities in order. Being somewhere else tomorrow is more important than driving a nice electric pickup. I know this forum isnā€™t an airport, and I donā€™t need to announce my departure, but I thought this was worth thinking about for others who drive lots of miles.

Dear Tom and fellow Lightning owner.
Are you kidding us all.???
Most of us are clamoring to do what you have done and above all enjoying every minute of it while you having a hand disability.
Most of us are worried what would happen to our knees and hips and our bodies reaching the fruitful age of 60 and what it will cost us to fix ourselves.
Tomā€¦ā€¦putting it in a nice wayā€¦..worried about the ā€œBATTERY WARRANTYā€.
You climbed the mountain and now you worried about getting down from it.?? Well, most of us are envious and somewhat jealous of your accomplishments. In fact I will not show your post to my wife because I will get to a lot of trouble. Her bucket list is long and I donā€™t have the time now to fulfill it.
I have owned battery vehicles, currently 2 EVs and a hybrid. Never had any issues with the batteries.
Keep the truck and run the axles off those motors and keep on seeing this country of ours with all its glory.
Donā€™t be afraid of the truck or its battery. Make the most of it and get your moneyā€™s worth out of it.
Good luck to you Tom.!!!

Youā€™ve got a great eye!

Yup, I was there last month and it was one of the most amazing places Iā€™ve seen. Iā€™ll probably make it out there again next spring.

Tom, what was your efficiency on average with the Lightning while towing that teardrop trailer?

EDIT: I saw some range figures, but wasn't positive which trailer you were talking about. And when you say usable range, does that mean using like 80% of the battery, or?

I never got a firm number I was comfortable with. I traded my A-frame 2,000 miles from home because I was having structural issues with one of the upper walls. The entire 7-day return trip had a 5-15 MPH tailwind, so Iā€™m not sure how it would do in calm air.

BUT it wasnā€™t great. I managed 1.1-1.2 at 60, and only as high as 1.3 at 55 MPH. I expected better with the aerodynamic profile, but itā€™s almost 9ā€™ tall. I averaged 1.4 at 60-65 MPH with the 68ā€ tall folded A-frame.

I wish I was that talented! Itā€™s made by a company in Ohio called nĆ¼Camp, which is now the largest teardrop manufacturer in the country. Theyā€˜re not cheap, but the build quality is next-level compared to others Iā€™ve seen. Mine is the TAB 400. https://nucamprv.com/tab400-camper/

That right there is key, the aerodynamic drag is not linear with speed but exponential. I can't see in my area towing a trailer. I'd have to stop ever 2 hours and sit for 30min, if I'm lucky. Love the truck for around town, but roadtrips and towing nope for me.

Wow, that's brutal! I think that converts to 52kw/100kms....yikes. that's 200km using 80%.... I really thought the aero shape would help more than that.

With our tent trailer I was getting 39-41 kw/100kms with our tent trailer, at about 105kmh (65mph). So about 20% better than you but going faster.

Had hoped with an aero shape, that a smaller rigid BH type rig we might get 45, but sounds like that's wishful thinking.

I'll do a test tow from an RV place sometime to see..... šŸ˜¶

Iā€™m glad I could provide a data point. I spent a bunch of money on that camper expecting better than I got. Iā€™ve towed over 20,000 miles with my Lightning and thought I had a good idea of how it would do, but apparently not.

I was able to make it home from the Oregon coast, but some of those stretches in Montana would have been dicey if I had a headwind.
