How much EV Infrastructure will $7.5B pay for?

$7.5B earmarked for EV infrastructure that is include in the infrastructure bill congress just passed doesn't sound like a lot when you consider how much EV infrastructure VW has paid for with the $1B they have spent so far on the Diesel-Gate reparations and considering how woefully inadequate the EV charging infrastructure still is. But the $7.5B from congress is just seed money. The money actually spent on EV infrastructure could easily double or triple that number with state and local government, public utility and private sector matching funds.

Even with $20B+ that's still not going to be enough to pay for the EV infrastructure required for a fully transitioned EV economy. I'm hoping for at least DC fast chargers along all Interstates and most major federal and state highways. I think this would be perfectly adequate for most people that can L2 home charge but would still leave people that live in apartments or hotels in rural areas or towns with no DCFCs significant charging challenges.

My biggest regret about the infrastructure bill is that it's going to take years to see the start of EV infrastructure promised by the bill. Planning, appropriating funds, permitting, constructing and commissioning of DCFCs is a long complicated process and congress will probably stretch out the spending of it's money for ten years. Still we should start seeing new chargers paid for by the bill about the time some of the most important EVs of our time, like the F150L, Expedition EV, Silverado EV, Tahoe EV, etc., start showing up on dealer lots.

0 infrastructure. You'll see money diverted to other things, pork projects, pockets, "lost", and then they will push for more....and more....and more...

What a dismal outlook. Have some trust. Yes other things are included, it's called compromise. But the bill will have it's intended effect.

What a dismal outlook. Have some trust. Yes other things are included, it's called compromise. But the bill will have it's intended effect.
It's not compromise, it's politics, and trusting this (any) government is (imo) a bad idea.

$7.5 Billion can pay for a lot until Government is involved. Then you have kickbacks, bribes and inefficiency to factor in. Government doesn't run anything successful, including itself.

I bought four BEVs and one PHEV that all benefited from federal tax credits. The federal tax credit money was money earmarked by congress just like the EV infrastructure money is now. To suggest that congress will not spend the money earmarked by congress on EV infrastructure is just posters passing unsubstantiated FUD.

The $7.5B will build about 300,000 150kW fast DC chargers. This is based on Tesla's cost of $250,000 total cost for a 10 x 150kW SuperCharger location. That includes all costs. 500,000 L2 stations at 25kW but that would not be useful as the fast DC charger can charge 12 cars a day vs. 2 cars a day, 3,600,000 vs. 1,000,000.

Be nice if Congress would add a loan program for building owners where the zero interest loan helps the owner install EV chargers for tenants and pay it off with the earnings.

As someone who actually sees how this kind of money gets spent in the government and has worked public and private jobs here is my $0.02.
It will take some time for that actual money to hit the ground.
In the mean time, all the industries that support the rollout now know it’s coming and want to get some $$. They will prep for increased production, electrical contractors will be positioning for these projects. Utilities will build more capability into their plans.
The industry wants to be ready as soon as the checks start flowing and that helps for projects that don’t even get any federal money directly.
I’ll be looking at the bill more next week to see how it impacts my companies prospects. Maybe we order a few Lightnings to go along with the R1Ts and help with the increased workload.

Much of the low fruit in EV's has been installed I'd think.

A massive push will simply ask, "where to put them?" It won't be in my neighborhood. So where?

Anytime you get a boondoggle you get greed. Who doesn't understand that is out of touch. The price of a charger currently will NOT be the price next year. It won't go down till the money is almost gone.

None of this stuff grows on trees, It will take mines, companies using overseas chips and so forth.

I damn sure don’t have multiple companies jocking it’s position in order to get some of that $7.5B, won’t be buying multiple Rivians or Lightning. I wanna commend the OP for reminding us how the rich play the game and avoid paying their fair share. It’s all about the money Jeff, Personally, I was born with nothing and I got about half of that left. So, yes, I am POOR.
