Revisiting the EPA with payload question, here's a newish youtuber EV enthusiast reporting on more clues to the F-150 range being smarter than your average bear.

One can only hope.

There is no way it will be 472 miles as the battery pack is too small. It would need some insane efficiency numbers for a brick travelling down the road.

All these internet report wanna be's need to get a life and earn a real living that have so little credibility to what they say. Go to an engineering college and get a degree so that you can use data to back up the garbage that you drivel on the internet about something that someone puts their life's work into. There is so much worthless misinformation on the internet about EV's that it makes your head spin.

I would not have posted that, this guy is a joke. At this time nobody but Ford knows the real specs.

Yes, it's only hope. Zero chance it gets 472 miles of range in any sort of remotely normal use case.

*Especially* now that they've announced the battery sizes that are smaller than expected. 131 kWh isn't going 472 miles in a full-size, squared-off truck.

131 kWh is less than double the 70 kWh of the standard range RWD Mach E, which gets 247 miles EPA range.

The Mach E, with a 131kWh battery, would get 462 miles of EPA range... even assuming no efficiency loss.

So, In order to get 472 miles of range, the Lightning would have to be more efficient than the much lighter, much more aerodynamic, single-motor Mach E.

Sure, the Mach E can probably do better than EPA, so maybe the F-150 doesn't have to be *quite* as efficient as the Mach E, but it's going to be WAY less efficient for MANY reasons.

472 miles is a fantasy, unless it's driving down a mountain at 30mph with a tailwind.

I mean, I don't disagree with you in general that many of the people reporting on EVs have a hilariously poor understanding of them... but there are also plenty of people doing a good job that don't have engineering degrees. A degree is definitely no guarantee that someone will be even remotely good at engineering or another sorta-adjacent job.

I've probably watched almost every video review of the truck. Yea, I repeatedly have seen 350~ plus miles on almost every review. Chances these aren't all low speed miles getting the GOM to say that? Probably low. However, with that number showing up consistently, 350++ in every review, it makes you think.

Our Mach-E gets something like 3.2 average miles per kWh. That's above the EPA rating of something like 3.07 (270 miles / 88 kWh usable battery). The Mach-E weight like 4500-4900 lbs and is without a doubt more aero friendly than the F-150.

The Lightning is said to weigh 6500 lbs per motor trend. With the 131 kWh usable battery, to get to 300 miles you'd need 2.29 miles per kWh. If you wanted to get to 350 miles per charge you're looking at needing 2.67 miles per kWh. Doable? Certainly possible but it's all going to come down to how well they improved the aero of the truck and driving conditions / speeds.

There's no way this is true. This YouTuber is a moron and this video is worthless. Quoting Twain, Such Wholesale Returns of Conjecture Out of Such a Trifling Investment of Fact.

472 miles on a 133 kWh battery would be 3.5 miles/kwh which is almost as much as the Mercedes EQS. The EQS has a drag coefficent of 0.20 whereas the F150L is probably closer to 0.82 (brick).

the video is just click bait for the guy to make money with people watching it. Not worth the time.

Same as that other guy who just takes rumors from Reddit, this forum and articles and turns it into a video. For some reason people keep posting his videos despite none of them providing any real valuable information.

At this point if it isn't from an established channel/outlet it's probably not worth the time.

I think the cd of the ICE F150 is .59. The Rivian is supposed to be about .36. Ford states in their marketing that the lightning is the most aerodynamic F150 ever...which probably doesn't mean much but closing up the grill with dimply plastic and reshaping the hood could have shaved a few points off. Still has those big side mirrors, though.

I'll take the big side mirrors. Everyone always says the mirrors on my car (2011 Audi Q5) are large, but I love them as you can actually see a lot in the mirrors. My wife's car (2020 corolla) has significantly smaller mirrors and it doesn't give much of a view behind you.
You would be surprised what closing off the grill and sculpting the body a little better can do. A large open grill creates a very large amount of drag.
