Agreed on all fronts.

Keep in mind that the $7.5B is a 5 year effort. It takes government a long time to get rolling. The Magic Docks are part of that effort, and that agreement was a "mere" 7 months ago. I'm actually shocked that it is moving forward as fast as it is, given that it was 3,500 "by end of 2024".
I hope they meet their goals/objectives. Along with Ford / Tesla having an adapter for the other superchargers that are not included in the 3,500.

If you can get the government gravy, get out your ladle. Would be dumb for an agile free market enterprise not to.

seriously curious though, not at all being argumentative.... Was that agreement outside of NEVI? or a carve out of IRA money? My (potentially misinformed) understanding is NEVI is distubuted thru the states and none of them have 100% finalized their plans and started distribution of funds.

They never specified.

Tesla, for the first time, will open a portion of its U.S. Supercharger and Destination Charger network to non-Tesla EVs, making at least 7,500 chargers available for all EVs by the end of 2024. The open chargers will be distributed across the United States. They will include at least 3,500 new and existing 250 kW Superchargers along highway corridors to expand freedom of travel for all EVs, and Level 2 Destination Charging at locations like hotels and restaurants in urban and rural locations. All EV drivers will be able to access these stations using the Tesla app or website. Additionally, Tesla will more than double its full nationwide network of Superchargers, manufactured in Buffalo, New York.

again just curious to know more about it... do you have a link / source that talks about the "cutting of a deal with the federal gov't"

Your excerpt doesnt mention that at all.

There are numerous references to Tesla getting fed dollars for stations that comply,with requirements to have CCS plugs.

No, there is nothing that says that Magic Dock stations are getting fed funds.

Cool thanks. I have the sense we have different perspectives. From the way I read that, Govt realize their ambitions will be a slow slow ineffective rollout. I think we all agree with that. So to save some face regarding the rollout of the obscene amount of tax payer money, they are allowing Tesla to retroactively add ccs to superchargers to show “progress”. It’s a charade, Tesla planned on installing those chargers already and as part of their increased focus on monetizing (opening up NACS) and capitiilzing on their dominant position in effective rollouts of DCFC stations. They as a company are doing right by their shareholders to satisfy this minor requirement to get the government gravy, but they were going to install those NACS ( the new standard ) superchargers either way… and do so to make money, subsidies or not. Free market.

The money comes from the IIJA, not the IRA. Texas is pretty close to implementation. According to this construction will start in February on 56 stations along highway corridors. Excerpt:

 In 2021, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) established the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program (“NEVI”)....

• Texas will receive $407.8 million over 5 years
• TxDOT will facilitate a Federal Pass-Through Competitive Grant Program
(closes in 2 weeks)
• Federal funds pay 80% of construction cost
• Private sector pays 20% of construction cost
• $147.1M available now, funds do not expire
• Phase 1 will cover 56 EV Study Areas


Last week the Texas Transportation Commission approved the TX EV infrastructure plan, which asked to "Proceed with the 56 sites identified for Phase 1 of the NEVI program with an estimated cost of $55-65M, which includes the operations and maintenance of these sites for 5 years."

I would think a company could operate at a huge profit under those conditions!

So, it looks like I will be able to go to San Antonio, but not Houston...except that the Buckees in Wharton with about 20 new Tesla stations isn't on this map!

Yep all states have a similar plan that had to be submitted to get the NEVI funding… lots and lots of planning, not a lot of action. The TESLA NACS deal / adapter is going to be a reality much faster and be a much better road trip charging “savior” than magic docks or NEVI.

Hoping “early 2024” for NACS adapter holds.

On my second charge of the day at the Mackinaw City location. Morning stop was to top off before heading to the falls and now I'm sitting here after expending 65% of the 80% I started the trip with. Pedestal 2D isn't showing up as selectable in the app even though it clearly has a dock. Nor entirety thrilled with 49 cents per kw, but the other fast charger in town is just as high from the reviews, so better to go with reliability.

Max delivery rate has been 128 kw across the 2 sessions but it just dropped to 97 kw at 50% for some reason. Guessing the battery is getting hot.
