The Ford Charge Station Pro utilizes a CCS1 Charge Cord connector but the bottom part of the receiver on the truck has a separate cover. as pictured below. My routine in the morning is to be carrying my briefcase and a cup of coffee, making it a challenge to close the bottom cover before closing the charge port door. My question is, why does the bottom portion need a separate cover. I want to remove the bottom cover in order to restore the extra 5-10 seconds it takes to pull the charge cord off, close the bottom cover and then close the charge port door. My calculation is that this will save me 458 minutes per year (7.63 hours)!!!

5 or 10 seconds to flip the cover with your finger before you close the charge door?

The cover is there to protect the DC fast charging pins.

It is good to keep them clean when you DCFC. It is too bad the 80amp home charger includes those pins, especially since the HIS system is so difficult to setup.

I feel you when it comes to the charge door and cover. I would have liked to see them design that cover so it opens when the door is opened and closes itself when the door is closed.

But hey, they didnā€™t ask me.

I think your math might be a bit off :)

If you are charging outdoors with a J1772 connector the cover keeps the rain, bugs, and dust out.

It is not necessary. It keeps dirt and bugs out. If you remove it, and dirt and bugs clog your pins, then you are responsible for the consequences of that.

I guess I'm not seeing your issue, since you have to have a hand free to close the door, so lifting the flap isn't a challenge. #FirstWorldProblems

Conversely when using the FSCP, the cover fills with water when it rains and it is next to impossible to get it all out without carrying a dry rag with you at all times. I suspect I have gotten more water on the pins closing the cover than it would ever have kept out.

I just close it a bit slower than usual when itā€™s wet.

I just splash the water right into the port. The engineers have to have thought of that possibility, right? It rains in Dearborn.
it snows a fair bit here too, yet the cold weather ā€œhoodā€ isnā€™t standard equipment šŸ§

My guess is that that cover is more a safety feature.
Isnā€™t that a 700 or 800 volt terminal right there?
I personally flip the cover on and off with the tip of the charger nozzle.
My gripe is with the push/open push/close mechanism of the charger door.
If you donā€™t hit the exact right spot on the close action, you have to do it again (and sometimes, yet again). Annoying!
Wish it was spring loaded like the old gas cap covers. Just swing open and swing closed. How easy is that?
